A Craftsvillage Uniting East and West 05/26/2026

We're building it together, brick by brick - a new place - a crafts village uniting east and west and a training center for rural women weavers to preserve India's treasured cultural heritage. The Poetry of Human Rights 05/19/2026

In 2026, Women Forward International partnered with the Goldman School of Public Policy and the International House at the University of California, Berkeley to mentor and provide workshops on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to international high school students in Northern California in continuation of our Human Rights Ambassador Program. This program combines creative arts with human rights training to introduce both international students and their whole communities to the history and principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many of the high school students come from Afghanistan and other conflict-affected regions.

Thanks to our partnership with the Woven Teaching Foundation and inspired by their manual "Human Rights Are for Everyone," WFI was able to offer more students this year workshops and a day trip to UC Berkeley. For many, this was their first experience on a college campus, and their first time getting to know other international students like them who have successfully navigated college education and are beginning their career development.

Over the course of a semester, our international high school students participate in weekly workshops exploring key concepts and figures in human rights history—such as Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Malala Yousafzai—while building knowledge of freedom, justice, and global citizenship.

The program culminates in a powerful final event in which the students, still learning English, share their original poetry in response to their reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This is the film of our 2026 April event at UC Berkeley.

Let's Make it Everyday 03/11/2026

This morning, I woke up and realized the light was already coming in. The sun that I assumed was a far-flung cold star was warming my bedroom already.

Then I remembered what today was. Today has a label: “International Women’s Day.”
..
you ask me on International Women’s Day “How do we cultivate a world that helps girls and women believe in themselves and in their ability to create meaningful change?”

For one thing, we do not celebrate one day. Pardon my bluntness. It comes from my conviction. The world has watered things down to this. But women’s day is every day because it is a human day.

We are entering an era of human kindness and concern and compassion for others whether they be men or women or whatever. There will become a time when none of this matters. We will laugh. Because it will be a time when we will see one another for the souls that we are.

Until then, let us be aware that there is so much more to life, and that the sunlight is coming in even when we think we’re in the dark.

I refuse the cliches. The clown act of life awaiting a numb stage with a numb audience has had its day.

It is now time to awaken.

Here is a poem from a girl, new to this country, just like we all were new to this country at one point. Her name is Ruth. She is from El Salvador:

My name is Rose of Dawn

I come from the mountains that represent us

I wake up thinking about Japanese anime characters

I dance with The Rose

Because I am a bouquet.

And together we are the song of peace

Today we are going to sing like the rain falls to the ground.

* Thank you to Susan Kohl, author of "The Best Things Mothers Do" and my fellow panelists Coffee for our "Still I Rise" International Women's Day gathering on March 8th.

The Hour - A Call for a New Humanity 12/18/2025

Five years ago, our artists, Board members, and students from across four continents recited one poem.

Now, we live its words through our Programs to uplift women and their whole communities in Afghanistan, India, Mexico, and the United States: https://conta.cc/4p2LAhe

Thank you for making it possible.

May 2026 be the year we know we are all One.
