Scholar Spotlight! We are thrilled to introduce one of the 2022 Winston Scholars - Nathaniel Ferre!

Nathaniel Ferre has been involved in healthcare delivery, outreach, and engagement as well as health education and promotion for the past 5 years. Professionally, as a program administrator at Huntsman Cancer Institute, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Mountain West, he coordinates programs related to colorectal cancer and clinical research recruitment. Nathaniel has been recognized on both the local and national levels for innovative approaches to connecting rural and medically underserved communities to accurate and actionable health information, as well as linking these communities with appropriate medical care. He volunteers his time at a local free clinic, producing quality metrics, leading a healthy living program, and acting as a Spanish-English translator. Nathaniel graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in Health, Society and Policy and a minor in Spanish and is currently perusing a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) dual degree from the University of Utah’s Business and Political Science schools respectively. In his personal time, Nathaniel enjoys the beautiful mountain scenery that surrounds him in Utah – taking advantage of runs, hikes, and walks close to his home as well as making bread and pasta from scratch for friends and family.

Scholar Spotlight! We are thrilled to introduce one of the 2022 Winston Scholars: Gabriella Aboulafia!

Gabriella (Gaby) is currently pursuing her MPP at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She came to graduate school to deepen her understanding of politics and institutions and learn how to apply this knowledge to further the reach of health policy. Gaby received her BSPH through the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. This summer, she is working at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legislation at the Department of Health and Human Services. Before coming to Harvard, she was at the Commonwealth Fund, doing research on US health insurance reform and affordability, and supporting the Health Care Coverage and Access grant portfolio. At the Fund, she learned that her interests lie at the intersection of health insurance coverage and access and broader structural inequities. She hopes to use her career to help inform health policy that can materially impact multiple dimensions of a person's life.

Scholar Spotlight Thursday!
Since her last update, Gwendolyn Lee has completed her Master in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and returned to medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where she has chosen to pursue a career in internal medicine. After graduating in June, she will join the internal medicine/primary care residency program at UCSF.

During medical school, Gwendolyn has continued to advance health technology and women's health through research. Through her work with Flare Capital Partners she co-authored a two-part online publication highlighting opportunities for digital health startups to revitalize the Medicare space. Through her work with MIT, she helped develop and co-authored a peer-reviewed publication introducing a machine learning algorithm to predict in-hospital death and guide fluid resuscitation in patients in the intensive care unit. Through her work with UCLA, she co-authored a peer-reviewed publication on risk factors for measles non-immunity in rubella-immune pregnant patients.

Gwendolyn's commitment to public service and health equity led her to apply for the inaugural Health Equity Challenge, presented by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and MolinaCares. Her concept proposal was recently selected as one of 10 to advance and develop a full project proposal that a community organization can implement. Raised in a multigenerational immigrant household, Gwendolyn grew up enjoying traditional recipes and the expression of love through home-cooked meals. When counseling patients on lifestyle interventions for obesity and diabetes, she discovered that well-intentioned but generic recommendations were often difficult to reconcile with cultural and family traditions. Her project aims to embrace cultural and individual values surrounding food, integrate behavioral health in a culturally conscious way, and build communities committed to preventive healthcare and healthy habits. She is eager to further develop her grant proposal and improve equitable care, especially for under-resourced and immigrant populations.
