Iliac vein compression can be caused by intrinsic or extrinsic factors. This compression can lead to serious complications, especially when it's extrinsic, and not part of normal anatomy. Examples include cysts, fibroids, and orthopedic hardware.

The first image is a good reference for extrinsic compression of the left common iliac vein by the left common iliac artery aneurysm via b-mode and color flow Doppler. The second image is a good reference for significantly increased venous flow velocities via spectral pulsed wave Doppler display through the area of compression.

If you're interested in learning more about this topic, join us for Universal Ultrasound Live, where you'll have the opportunity to learn alongside physicians and sonographers. They'll share their insights and knowledge, giving you a physician's perspective blended with clinical knowledge.

During the event, you'll gain valuable insight into the technical protocol for central vein assessment. This should include diameters via B-mode imaging, assessment of flow velocity, and volume flow via pulsed-wave Doppler in the inferior vena cava, bilateral common, internal, external iliac, and common femoral veins.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to streamline the correct patient pathway. Register for Universal Ultrasound Live today!

Ultrasound is a game-changer in the healthcare industry. It not only streamlines patient screening but also creates interventional maps for various disease states to aid in the intervention whether it be surgical or endovascular. It also improves patients outcomes post intervention by surveillance over time.

As a healthcare professional, I believe in this standard of care as it eliminates patients falling through the cracks of our current system and provides improved patient satisfaction. By utilizing ultrasound, we can ensure that our patients are being cared for over time, without any gaps in their healthcare journey.

Come learn with us at Universal U on Saturday, June 1 in New Jersey! See you there!

Imaging the abdominal and pelvic veins can be challenging, even for experienced sonographers. To improve your imaging and diagnostic capabilities, consider using additional techniques such as various types of transducers and imaging the patient's flank while directing the ultrasound beam perpendicular to the vessel. These techniques can be valuable when image optimization tools and supine positioning aren't enough.

Join us at the Universal U Live Event on Saturday, June 1 in New Jersey to learn more about interpreting vascular ultrasound and ultrasound techniques on live patient models with pathology. Earn up to 10 AMA Cat 1 Credits!
