Before Brown v. Board, There Was Alice Piper | NEA 06/04/2026

I remember the NEA American Indian and Alaska Native caucus speaking to this at the RA!

From the article: “The court ordered the district to admit Alice on June 2, 1924, the same day that Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act, finally recognizing Native Americans as U.S. citizens.”

Before Brown v. Board, There Was Alice Piper | NEA Thirty years before Brown transformed public education in the United States, a 15-year-old Paiute student named Alice Piper stood at the center of a landmark legal victory that challenged school segregation.

How special to meet a fellow Canadian-American, from my home province of British Columbia, especially after reading one of her books many years ago, eh! It was captivating hearing author and scholar Irshad Manji discuss how everyday people can discuss polarizing issues productively, transforming them into trust-building opportunities https://www.moralcourage.com

Solidarity and good morning from DC! How incredible to sit next to author Eric Liu, CEO of Citizen University on the flight over, and have the opportunity to learn and share about local organizing, community and hope. I wore my “Paraeducators: because teachers need heroes too” shirt, and met Sarah Wofford, the President of the Oregon School Employees Association. Did a couple zooms and went for dinner with the team.

Bill and I went for our morning “walking caucus” and now we’re ready for the day!
