In honor of Higher Education Day, let’s discuss some differences between accredited naturopathic medical programs and certificate programs!

Accredited Naturopathic Doctorate Programs:

🩺 The only path to become a licensed naturopathic physician who can diagnose and treat patients
🩺 Eligible to take nationally recognized licensing exams
🩺 Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
🩺 4 year, in-residence schools that teach both natural and conventional therapeutics
🩺 Faculty are licensed providers or have the highest degree possible for their field
🩺 Accreditation means external review and oversight holding schools to ethical and education standards

Traditional Naturopath Certification Programs:

🌿 Cannot legally diagnose or give medical advice, but may be helpful to guide personal care
🌿 Not eligible to become a licensed ND or take licensing exams
🌿 Not acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education for accreditation, federal financial aid or degree recognition
🌿 No set standard of education or clinical training

We believe that everyone should have access to healthcare where they feel safe and heard. In honor of Pride Month, let’s talk about how a naturopathic medical education supports LGBTQIA+ patients!

Each of our schools’ campus and community clinics provide safe and supportive spaces to patients from all backgrounds through practitioners and interns trained in providing identity-specific care. Supervised clinical training and relevant courses in our schools’ curricula support students in this as they receive their degree.

These courses range from specific classes such as “Naturopathic Management of Special Populations,” to general Clinical Medicine courses with a strong emphasis on LGBTQIA-specific care. Each of our accredited medical schools not only educate their students about the spectrum of identities that exist within this community, but also how to provide professional care that helps patients feel seen and fully supported.

Naturopathic medicine is the best of all worlds!

By seeing a licensed naturopathic doctor, patients can have access to their desired combination of natural and conventional approaches to healing. While it's true that NDs focus on non-invasive, natural therapeutics, their medical background also permits conventional therapies such as minor surgeries and prescribing drugs, if warranted for a specific patient. *Note: The scope of NDs varies by jurisdiction.

This second principle of naturopathic medicine emphasizes the body's inherent ability to heal itself, recognizing that whole person healing involves the physical, mental, and emotional/spiritual dimensions. So, how does naturopathic medicine revolutionize healthcare? The 6 Principles of Naturopathic Medicine is the secret formula for top-notch, individualized medical care that focuses on the whole patient.

The first principle, Do No Harm, helps naturopathic doctors ensure that their treatments do not compromise any part of the individual's overall well-being. By choosing therapies that are non-invasive and minimize risk of harmful side effects, naturopathic medicine supports the body's natural healing capabilities without adversely affecting other aspects of health.
