University of California UCDC Law Program The UCDC Law Program is a collaborative externship program that allows law students from four Univer The Program typically enrolls between 15 and 35 students.

The UCDC Law Program is a uniquely collaborative, full-semester externship program in Washington, DC. The program combines a weekly seminar-style course with a full-time field placement to offer law students an unparalleled opportunity to learn how federal statutes, regulations, and policies are made, changed, and understood in the nation’s capital. During four months’ total immersion in the theor

y and practice of Washington lawyering, students will have contact with all three branches of the federal government, independent regulatory agencies, and advocacy nonprofits. The Program includes law students from Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. Students will receive 13 units for successful completion of the program: 10 units for the field placements and 3 units for the required companion course, “Law and Lawyering in the Nation’s Capital.” Currently there is no cap on enrollment. The Program is housed at the University of California, Washington Center, a UC facility located at 1608 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., just minutes from the White House and most government departments and agencies.

Hello! I’m Erick, a 2L at UC Law San Francisco. For my spring semester, I am interning full time at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Living in Washington, D.C. has been a wonderful learning experience. As an intern, I work closely with Law Clerks drafting opinions and cite checking other opinions ready for publishing. The district court is packed with fascinating cases involving national interest groups, government agencies, and a constitutional crisis or two.

I have learned so much here, and I am grateful for the UCDC program for offering such a unique opportunity.

I’m Michael, a 2L at Berkeley Law. I’m currently in Washington, D.C. as part of the UCDC Law program, where I’m in my tenth week at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

As a legal intern in the Strategic Initiatives Department, I’ve worked on pro-truth cases protecting the ability of folks to freely confront the legacy of race in American life. During my time at the LDF, I’ve had the opportunity to support litigation in both the higher education and K–12 space. I’ve supported coalition-building efforts in states such as Alabama and Texas, and travelled for federal court proceedings in Boston.

This experience has been deeply fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the LDF’s incredible mission, and learn from world-class legal practitioners.

I’m Robert, a “dualie” JD-MBA in my last semester at Berkeley Law. I am currently in Washington D.C. participating in the UCDC Law program where I have completed a rewarding three weeks at the Office of the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, where I am a legal extern jointly assigned to the Office of Economic and Business Affairs and the Office of Management.

In this short time, I’ve had the opportunity to work on high-profile, real-time issues related to national economic security and international investment, while also delving into longer-term research at the intersection of public and private international law, trade, investment, and domestic regulation. Together, these have made for a consistently engaging and rewarding experience. Rarely is there a dull moment.

Grateful to the team at State for the warm welcome!
