Trained graduate and undergraduate students tutors will assist you at any stage of your writing process, from initial brainstorming to final revisions. The main campus Center is located on the second floor of Lauinger (217a). Our tutors will help you meet your immediate goals (such as an assigned essay) as well as help you develop as a writer. We’re happy to help at any stage of your writing proce

ss, from brainstorming to revision. Tutors will offer advice on developing a thesis, using evidence, organization and flow, sentence structure, and more. We won’t proofread your paper for you. Ideally, we want to help you improve your own critical thinking, revision, and editing skills — enabling you to become your own editor. FAQ:
Will a tutor proofread my paper for me? But we will help you learn how to revise and edit your work to improve all the writing you do. Can I work with any graduate or undergraduate tutor? Graduate students work with graduate tutors, and undergraduate students work with undergraduate tutors. Because ours is a peer-run center, we offer different hours for graduate and undergraduate tutoring. Be sure to make an appointment during the appropriate time. My paper is due in three hours. Can I meet with a writing tutor now? Yes, but that’s not ideal. We recommend leaving time to revise. We prefer to meet with you more than 24 hours before a paper is due. If you come in for a consultation at the last minute, you risk not having enough time to revise your work after the session. Do I have to make an appointment? We do accept walk-ins, but we give priority to students who make appointments. By registering your information online and scheduling an appointment, you enable us to give you the most effective feedback over a series of meetings rather than during a single session. Even if you use the center on a walk-in basis, you still need to fill out our online tutorial form before meeting with a tutor. Can I be late for my appointment? If you show up late for your appointment, you forfeit your session. Tutorials last 30 minutes, and tutors and students use all of that time to discuss the writing and ideas at hand. What happens if I miss more than one appointment? If you don’t show up for two scheduled sessions, you will no longer be able to schedule appointments, but you will still be able to use the Center as a walk-in client. Unfortunately, the 2020 Writing Center Awards have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given the unprecedented levels of stress and disconnection that our staff, tutors, and fellow students are experiencing, we feel that it is not prudent to continue with the Writing Center Awards at this time, as those involved are not able to produce their best work.

That said, the Georgetown University Writing Center remains committed to elevating and celebrating the work of our peers in the Georgetown community, alongside our partners at U.S. News & World Report. The Writing Center will continue to provide virtual tutoring sessions for the remainder of this semester and beyond as necessary.

We would also like to specify the following:
-All submissions for this year’s Awards will automatically be re-submitted for the 2021 Awards cycle.
-The 2021 Awards will be open to any papers written during either the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school year.
-For those applicants who will be graduating this school year, their papers from the 2019-2020 cycle will still be eligible for an award in the 2020-2021.
