Instead of a plain word list, shape the chart itself around the pattern.

A boat 🚤 for /oa/, a moon 🌙 for /oo/.

An apple 🍎 for short a, a nose 👃🏼 for /n/

There’s real research behind it too: pairing a picture with a sound reduces how much repetition kids need, cuts down on confusion, and helps that knowledge transfer into actual reading and spelling, especially for kids who struggle with reading.

It’s called visual mnemonics.

Organize your list by concepts and teach the common irregular words a couple at a time through sound mapping.

Teaching my daughter today, and this one hit me again.

Now the letter y is definitely a vowel sound more often than w but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t explain that w can play that role too.

Time to give W some additional credit 😂.

It’s one of those small phonics details that completely changes how you explain spelling to kids who ask “why.”
