Happy 4th of July!

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th. The holiday's name combines the words "June" and "nineteenth." It commemorates the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation (and their subsequent freedom from chattel slavery) reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, three years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the proclamation.

It is considered the longest-running holiday in African American and Black communities and was often observed with community celebrations on the third Saturday in June. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 after the U.S. Congress passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.

As the first Catholic and Jesuit higher education institution to establish an LGBTQ Resource Center in 2008, Georgetown celebrates LGBTQIA+ identities and communities — best understood in the context of each person’s identities and communities — and draws upon our Jesuit values to continue to advance equity and inclusion. Happy !

Remembering and honoring those who gave their lives while serving.

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
Georgetown joins the nation in celebrating AAPI Heritage Month in May, honoring the legacies, accomplishments, and cultures of Pacific Islanders, East Asians, Southeast Asians, and South Asians in the United States. This month, in particular, we celebrate the many contributions of Georgetown’s AAPI community and highlight the teaching, scholarship, advocacy, and cultural enrichment efforts of our university community related to AAPI heritage.
We invite you to explore the “Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Cultures and Heritage at Georgetown” landing page and to join for university and D.C.-area events.

What is Holi: Also known as the Festival of Colors, Holi is a popular Hindu holiday with a rich history, celebrated most commonly in India. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the changing of the seasons from winter to spring.

The festival of Purim commemorates the Divinely orchestrated salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants, and women, in a single day.” It is celebrated with Megillah readings, gifts of food, charity, feasting, and merriment.

Happy Purim to those who celebrate!
