Please join us in welcoming Tim Rosenberger Jr. to Georgetown Law as our new Olin-Smith-Darling Fellow!

We are honored that the Georgetown Center for the Constitution was selected to host Tim and look forward to supporting his work. Learn more about Tim on our newly updated team page here: https://www.law.georgetown.edu/constitution-center/our-team/

It has been a full and engaging day at the Georgetown Center for the Constitution as we host a book workshop for Faculty Director Professor Stephanie Barclay’s forthcoming book, Constitutional Rights in a Democracy.

The discussion has explored questions of virtue, democratic legitimacy, and human flourishing, with scholars engaging closely with the manuscript and its central arguments.

Scholars from Georgetown Law and institutions across the country joined us on campus for a wide-ranging conversation, offering thoughtful feedback as Professor Barclay continues developing this important project.

Tomorrow, the Georgetown Center for the Constitution is bringing together leading scholars for a book workshop devoted to the forthcoming book of our Faculty Director, Professor Stephanie Barclay, Constitutional Rights in a Democracy.

The book takes on a foundational question: What work should constitutional rights do, and which institutions should protect them? Professor Barclay develops a new account of constitutional-rights adjudication that preserves an important role for courts while better reconciling judicial review with democratic principles and human flourishing.

The workshop will convene scholars from Georgetown Law and across the country for a day of discussion and engagement with the manuscript.

We are especially excited to host this workshop for one of our own and to support an important new contribution to constitutional scholarship.

The Center is proud to announce that our Research Fellows Program has been renamed the Scott and Cyan Banister Research Fellows Program, and we are thrilled to welcome our 2026-2028 cohort of Banister Research Fellows!

Established in Fall 2024 by Faculty Director Stephanie Barclay, the now newly named Scott & Cyan Banister Research Fellows Program is a cornerstone of the Center’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of constitutional law professors. This premier non-residential fellowship program provides 28 early-career academics with unparalleled support and mentorship, bridging the gap between emerging voices and the nation’s most distinguished legal minds.

The hallmark of the program is its rigorous review process, granting junior scholars direct, dedicated commentary from preeminent faculty at elite institutions and scholars including Constitutional Leaders such as Cass Sunstein (Harvard Law), Eugene Volokh (UCLA Law), Justin Driver (Yale Law School), Nicole Garnett (Norte Dame Law), Larry Solum (UVA Law), Will Baude (UChicago Law).

Past Key Program Metrics & Highlights:
▪️ Junior Scholars: 28 Scholars
▪️ Senior Scholar Commentators: 21 Preeminent Faculty Experts
▪️ Research Papers Workshopped: 22 Original Constitutional Law Papers
▪️ In-Person Conferences: 2 Major Symposia (Fall 2024 & Fall 2025)
▪️ Virtual Masterclasses: 17 workshopped papers

“That article that I workshopped at the Center back in December was accepted for publication by the Yale Law Journal. Honestly, none of this would have happened without the workshop and getting comments from you, the senior commentator Justin Driver, and other fellows.”
- Wanling Su, Indiana University, 2024-2026 Research Fellow

Thank you to all our supporters who make this program possible, and a warm welcome to our 2026–2028 cohort of Banister Research Fellows! See our full list of Banister Research Fellows here: https://www.law.georgetown.edu/constitution-center/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=2813

Two years of extraordinary growth, expanded reach, and lasting impact. We are proud to share the Georgetown Center for the Constitution’s 2024–2026 Special Report, highlighting a remarkable period of new programs, influential scholarship, and growing impact across the legal and academic communities.

The Center’s impact reaches well beyond Georgetown Law, shaping conversations across the legal and academic communities nationwide.
In just the past two years, the Center has:

• Engaged 175 legal scholars
• Trained 150 law clerks
• Convened 80 judges
• Hosted 52 events
• Launched four new programs, providing new opportunities for scholarship, collaboration, and publication

But our impact extends far beyond the numbers.

Alumni of our programs have gone on to shape law and public policy across the country, serving throughout the executive branch, the White House, Congress, leading nonprofit organizations, and the legal profession. Some have even gone on to serve on the federal judiciary.

None of this would be possible without the extraordinary community surrounding the Center. We are grateful to the scholars, judges, students, alumni, speakers, supporters, and friends who have contributed their time, ideas, and enthusiasm to our work.

We cannot wait for what lies ahead.

This past week at the Georgetown Center for the Constitution featured an exciting slate of programs and scholarship across the constitutional law community.

On Tuesday, Faculty Director Professor Stephanie Barclay delivered Ohio State’s annual Constitution Day Lecture on “The Future of the Religion Clauses at the Supreme Court,” exploring the future of religious liberty at the Court.

On Wednesday, the Center co-hosted Georgetown Law’s Supreme Court Institute Annual Supreme Court Term Preview for the first time. Professor Barclay joined leading Supreme Court experts to preview major cases of the October 2026 Term for Georgetown Law students.

On Constitution Day, Faculty Director Professor Randy Barnett spoke to Georgetown Law’s Federalist Society on “But What About Slavery? Reframing the Founding,” examining antislavery constitutionalism and the Founding.

We closed out the week with a Book Workshop for Professor Brad Snyder and his forthcoming book, Special Favorite of the Laws. Now in its second year, our Book Workshop series gives authors the opportunity to share works in progress and receive substantive commentary from expert scholars ahead of publication.

And we’re just getting started—stay tuned for more programs, scholarship, and exciting announcements from the Center in the weeks ahead!

We had a wonderful day hosting Georgetown Law Professor Brad Snyder for a Book Workshop on his forthcoming book, Special Favorite of the Laws: How the Supreme Court Overturned the Last Civil Rights Act of Reconstruction and Prevented Congress from Protecting Our Constitutional Rights.

The workshop provided an opportunity to hear from each of our participants and engage with their perspectives on Professor Snyder’s work. We appreciated the thoughtful contributions and were pleased to bring together such a distinguished group of scholars for the workshop. We look forward to seeing Professor Snyder’s forthcoming book in print.
