The artificial intelligence discussion is inevitably wrapped up with the topic of personhood.

The philosopher Boethius defined a person as “an individual substance of a rational nature.” Building on the tradition, St. Thomas Aquinas integrated this definition into his works. In the 20th Century, philosopher Karol Wojtyla, later Pope St. John Paul II, expanded on this by emphasizing three properties of our rational nature:

1. Interiority.
2. Consciousness.
3. Subjective experience.

Watch our new video “Defining Terms: Personhood” by Fr. James Brent, a Dominican friar and a professor of philosophy at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception.

According to St. Thomas, the soul is the form of the living body. It organizes it, animates it, and drives it to grow and act in certain ways. But what sets the human soul apart? What is human intelligence?

As artificial intelligence continues to introduce ethical and philosophical questions, it's important to review the foundations of what it means to be human.

Fr. James Brent does this with clarity in our latest addition to our AI series, "What is Human Intelligence?"

Every spring, the Thomistic Institute offers an undergraduate study abroad semester in Rome, Italy, for those interested in the Thomistic tradition. The program offers the unique opportunity to study at the Angelicum in Rome, a university that descends from the 13th-century Dominican studium for which Aquinas wrote the Summa Theologica.
