What a week it's been — and we still have a BBQ & Student Organization Fair to go! So far, we've moved Hoyas into their new homes at the 55 H St. residence hall, made new friends at welcome events across the Hilltop and Capitol campuses and locked in for the first two days of class.

"Set your intellect on fire with the desire for learning," Georgetown President Eduardo Peñalver urged graduate students at Georgetown University's annual Graduate Induction Ceremony on Tuesday.

During the ceremony, new and returning graduate students filled historic Gaston Hall to hear messages of advice, encouragement and wisdom from Peñalver and nine other leaders from across Georgetown the day before classes begin.

Their guidance followed a similar theme: pursue restless inquiry, expand your horizons and connect with others along the journey.

"We want you to challenge your own assumptions with ideas from within and beyond your disciplines and within and beyond your own perspectives," Peñalver said. "... We look forward to seeing the contributions you will make in your respective fields of study advancing human knowledge in the service of others."

Henry Schadwinkel (G’27) spent much of three years at the University of Oregon incognito, capering around campus in a duck costume.

Schadwinkel earned his wings as the Oregon Duck, one of the most recognizable mascots in college athletics, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy and management. He shed the mascot’s jaunty cap and necktie in June upon his graduation, but he carries the duck’s collegial spirit with him as he starts his M.A. in American Government at the Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences this fall.

"I’m most looking forward to building lasting relationships with my cohort, the Georgetown collective and the DC community," Schadwinkel said.

After nearly four years of teaching, Jennifer Ayarkwa (G'28) is returning to the classroom on the student side this fall.

Ayarkwa is joining the Master of Arts in Latin American Studies program at School of Foreign Service - Georgetown University, bringing experience studying abroad in Spain and teaching English in Spain and North and South America.

“As a teacher, I really valued active learning rather than passive listening,” Ayarkwa said. “I'm looking forward to finding creative ways to think and learn again.”

Anthony Choi’s (G’28) career trajectory has evolved over the years, from communications strategy to Army service and now federal IT solutions.

To scale his skills as the AI sector expands, Choi is returning to school for his Master of Professional Studies in Artificial Intelligence Management at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies this fall.

“My goal is to help organizations adopt AI while meeting rigorous security, governance and compliance requirements,” said Choi, who will continue working full-time as he earns his master's.

This summer, master's student Luca Vozzi (G'27) fulfilled a dream he'd held since he chose Georgetown: interning with the German automaker BMW.

A student in the School of Foreign Service - Georgetown University's M.A. in European Studies program, Vozzi spent the past couple months interning with the BMW Group's government affairs team in DC. His first day involved hosting a charity golf tournament, and his weeks since have been filled with tracking legislation, collaborating with trade associations and briefing company executives.

“It’s very rewarding,” Vozzi said. “I have a great team. I’ve learned so many things. I expanded my network, and it’s helping me already because they’re introducing me to all these people for a job next year, so it’s helpful to have them as my colleagues.”

“Growing up in DC, I always saw Georgetown as my dream school,” said Keiti Lazo (G’27).

Lazo, a new master’s student in the Master of Arts in Educational Transformation at Georgetown University, is the first in her family to pursue a graduate degree. Though she was born and raised in DC, she maintains strong ties to El Salvador, her parents' home country.

She joins Georgetown from the University of the District of Columbia and aspires to become an elementary school teacher specializing in English language acquisition.
