The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) is a non-partisan membership organization that supports licensure of effective professional educators. The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) represents professional standards boards and commissions and state departments of education in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the U.S. Associate members include constituent organization with an interest in the preparation, continuing development, employment, and certification of educational personnel.

🎙️ The latest episode of What’s Going On… is now available!

As NASDTEC works to define what novice educators need to know and be able to do from the very beginning of their careers, an important question is: What does the science of learning and development tell us about how teachers should be prepared to understand and support their students?

In this episode, Mary-Dean Barringer, Project Manager for the Novice Educator Essential Competencies (NEEC) project, joins Dr. Maria Hyler of the EdPrepLab and Dr. Diana Lys of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education.

Their conversation explores how students learn and develop, how the science of learning can inform teacher preparation, and which competencies are essential for helping novice educators become adaptive, reflective, and effective professionals.

Whether you work in educator preparation, licensure, professional learning, or P–12 education, this episode offers an opportunity to consider how we can better prepare educators for the realities of their first years in the profession.

A new resource to support ethical decision-making in education!

NASDTEC and the National Council for the Advancement of Educator Ethics (NCAEE) are pleased to announce the launch of the Ethical Decision-Making Support for Educators (EDMSE) AI chatbot.

Designed to help educators explore complex ethical situations, the tool encourages thoughtful reflection, identifies relevant ethical considerations, and provides a starting point for examining possible courses of action grounded in professional ethics.

The EDMSE can also support teacher preparation, professional learning, and discussions among educators and school leaders about the application of educator ethics in real-world situations. Its responses are informed by the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) and a curated library of resources.

The chatbot is an educational and informational resource—not legal advice, an official policy interpretation, or a substitute for professional judgment.

Join NASDTEC for the 2027 National Convening on Artificial Intelligence in Education, January 27–29, 2027, at the InterContinental Hotel in New Orleans.

This national convening will bring together leaders and professionals from educator preparation, licensure, professional standards, school districts, universities, and the education workforce to explore how AI is changing education—and what that means for the people who prepare, license, support, and lead educators.

Expect three days of engaging general sessions and concurrent presentations focused on:
• Practical applications of AI in education
• AI and educator preparation
• State AI policy and licensure
• AI literacy and professional learning
• Ethics, professional judgment, and responsible AI
• Transparency, accountability, and trust
• AI's impact on teaching, learning, assessment, workforce planning, and educator well-being

This is an important national conversation about both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with AI in education.
