San Miguel School Washington DC

San Miguel School Washington DC San Miguel is an independent Catholic middle school educating middle school boys San Miguel School serves 90 at-risk children in grades six through eight.

During their early years, our students encounter many obstacles to their education, including poverty, unstable homes, low-performing schools, language difficulties, and violent neighborhoods. San Miguel inspires these young men to rise above their challenges and become serious students and responsible citizens. San Miguel students and their families live at, or well below, the poverty level. Many

do not receive adequate academic support at home because their parents have limited formal education or English-language skills. San Miguel School strives to build a strong support network for each student’s family and encourages their participation in their sons’ education. In the academically-rigorous, nurturing, and faith-filled environment of San Miguel, these at-risk children are achieving remarkable success. Although most children are academically two grade levels behind when they arrive at San Miguel, most graduate with above grade-level skills and knowledge. 100 percent of our graduates have been accepted into college preparatory high schools and many of our early graduates are now enrolled in college. This academic progress is accompanied by physical, emotional, moral, and spiritual growth. When you enter a classroom at San Miguel School, you will meet alert, kind, and respectful young adults who are enthusiastic about learning and committed to helping their others in their school and community.

We’re proud to share that our President, David Palank, was recently featured on Ascended Consulting podcast in a conversation about student accountability and school culture.

What does this look like?

•Students are explicitly taught what is expected of them
•Adults build strong, trusting relationships with them
•Mistakes come with consequences, but also a path forward
•Students are expected to take ownership and try again

We’re grateful David had the chance to share San Miguel’s story, and even more grateful for the students, families, faculty, and supporters who make this culture possible every day.

Huge congratulations to Alessandro! Nominated by Mrs. Britton for his “terrific focus and accomplishment.” 👏

Male students often feel pressure to hide their emotions and focus solely on academics, leaving little opportunity for creative expression or meaningful engagement with the world around them. That’s why we make sure to recognize the curiosity, dedication, and hard work our students bring.

With 90% of our students learning English as a second language, individualized support matters.

As a language arts teacher, Ms. Dalton inspires a love of reading by making sure students choose books that interest them, at a reading level that’s right for them.

The result? Rising reading levels. Growing confidence.

This is what student-centered literacy looks like. Follow for more from our classrooms.

Why do we sort our students into Houses before the school year begins?

Because belonging is one of the strongest predictors of student success.

Before the first academic lesson is taught, every Miguel Man is welcomed into a House where he’ll build friendships across grade levels, learn from older student leaders, and become part of a brotherhood rooted in mentorship, accountability, and healthy competition.

House Sorting isn’t just a tradition—it’s an intentional part of the San Miguel model. Research shows that when students feel they belong, they experience stronger academic achievement, better attendance, and greater resilience.

That’s why every school year begins by making sure each Miguel Man knows two things: what is expected of him and that he belongs.
