Thank you to the presenters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Peace and Conflict Studies program) who contributed valuable insights during the PJSA 2024 conference session, Intersecting Identities and Access to Peace & Justice: Perspectives on Reproductive Rights, Economic Security, and Systemic Violence. This session focused on how intersecting identities influence access to reproductive justice, economic security, and responses to systemic violence.
- Destiny Smith explored intervention strategies at the intersection of race, gender, and the environment, addressing how abortion laws impact marginalized communities.
- Taron Lilly examined the barriers women face in accessing support services within the broader economy, highlighting various forms of intersecting oppression.
-Cathy Knowles brought attention to the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit individuals (MMIWG2S) in Manitoba, situating it within the context of colonial violence and systemic racism.
Their presentations contributed to key conversations on justice and systemic inequities.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese grassroots movement of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors. They are recognized for advocating a nuclear-free world and spreading awareness of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. Their personal testimonies have helped establish a global “nuclear taboo.” While no nuclear weapon has been used in nearly 80 years, growing threats make their message more urgent than ever. This award honors their legacy in promoting peace and disarmament.

This is the Gun Sculpture in Edmonton, a powerful artwork that began as a global peace initiative. Built between 1995 and 2000, it incorporates 7,000 weapons collected from around the world. Since then, it has traveled to Europe, the U.S., and Asia, and returned to Alberta in 2024. The sculpture also honors victims of gun violence, featuring a wall that shares their stories. It stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for peace and justice worldwide.

Greetings PJSA Members!
Hope that your Fall semester has started well, and the changing leaves are presenting a fabulous fireworks show! I write you today on the International Day of Peace with exciting news from the PJSA! As Fundraising Chair of the PJSA board, I wanted to reconnect once again, thank ALL PJSA members for coming along with us on this exciting journey for peace! I write to solicit your support as we head into our Annual Conference season. We hope you will support the great work of this dynamic organization. Without our members we are nothing!
As a membership organization we generate most of our revenue through membership dues and our annual conference event. This year PJSA is organizing an online auction to help support our bi-national organization! You DO NOT have to be at our conference at Niagara University this year to participate! Many of our online auction items are available to bid on from wherever you are in the world! Help support us by either a donation at our PJSA website here (https://www.peacejusticestudies.org/donate/), or via the online auction site here (just click the donate button: https://givebutter.com/c/DcoD6Z).
With war raging around the world, what better way to support PJSA that to donate or bid on an item! We have vacation rentals and football tickets (some physical/novelty items will also be available to those attending the PJSA conference). Peace takes no less resources than war! Please consider donating directly to the PJSA or bidding on one of our exciting items (or do both)!
We send this on International Day of Peace to celebrate the power of peace and the realization that peace is possible! Imagine a world in which there was no violence, hatred, or conflict… hard to image… but it will only be possible if we work together! We hope you will support the peacemakers and peacebuilders of the PJSA as we aspire to realize world peace – we need your support! Considering providing a small donation now.
Thank you in advance for all your support as PJSA Members on this International Day of Peace. Reach out should you have questions or further ways to donate. I hope to hear from each of you, see you bids come rolling in, and see your support make a real difference in the world!
In peace and solidarity,
Jeremy A. Rinker
