Mark your calendars, Wildcats! We have so many exciting events coming up as we celebrate another great year at Garrison— including DPR Family Movie Night TONIGHT at 5pm! Join us on the field for a special viewing of “Turning Red.”

It may be a cloudy morning, but Spring has definitely sprung on S Street!

April also marks the beginning of enrollment season!

Here’s how and when to re-enroll:

Bring the same documents to arrival any morning next week and give them to Ms. Bailey/Ms. Ramirez at the table in the front foyer, or bring them to Ms. Bailey at dismissal 3:30-6:00!

Need a weekend time to re-enroll? We can do that, too! Join us on Enrollment Saturday, April 23 from 9am-12pm!

Why it’s so important: DCPS requires all schools to be mostly re-enrolled in April so we can finalize school budgets and staffing decisions for next year. Please help us!

What’s in it for your family: Not only will you secure your child’s seat for next year, but you’ll help your child’s class win a pizza party courtesy of the Garrison PTO for being fully, 100% re-enrolled (or withdrawn) by April 30! Thank you for your support!

📰Extra extra! 📰

We are SO proud of our Wildcats and their families for doing their part to keep our community safe! 80% of our K-5th grade students have had at least one shot, above and beyond the national average for children eligible for the Covid vaccine.

Garrison was featured on the FRONT PAGE of the yesterday for our efforts to get each and every eligible Wildcat vaccinated. If you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out, please clink the link in our bio!

Our next clinic is THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th from 3:30-7pm! Students from our January clinic will get their second shots, and any not-yet-vaccinated students and grownups can get their first shots! We’ll also still have booster shots available for vaccinated grownups. Join us and spread the word!

Happy New Year, Wildcats!

All DCPS buildings are closed today due to the snow. We handed out 150 rapid test kits yesterday to staff and families who came by school, and have plenty more! Test kit pickups are now Tuesday and Wednesday (not today), and school will now reopen Thursday, Jan 6. Your child must now be tested on Wednesday, Jan 5, NOT Tuesday, and results uploaded here by 4pm at Tests taken before Jan 5 will not be accepted. Essentially, the previously-announced schedule for this week is pushed back one day due to the weather.

Sorry for any inconvenience this change causes, but we hope you can enjoy the snow today, and we'll see you soon!

At Garrison, we like to call our community a “school family,” and we are so proud of the ways that our school family has looked out for one another during these challenging past few years. In the wake of the pandemic, our student support team (led by our outstanding school social worker Tierra Anthony) and the PTO turned their focus towards making sure Garrison families had the resources to help their students thrive at home. Since March 2020, the PTO has distributed hundreds of grocery gift cards and provided other financial assistance to Garrison families. As teachers and Wildcats gradually transitioned back into a school environment, the PTO has also worked closely with Ms. Anthony to foster staff and student wellness within the building. Thank you, Ms. Anthony!

Want to support these continued efforts to foster family, staff, and student wellness in 2022? Consider a year-end gift to the Garrison PTO today! Link in bio.

The countdown continues! 6 days until winter break! For Day 6, we wanted to give an inside peek at the beautiful student work displayed throughout our school building. Surrounding students with thoughtful displays of their own work can send several important messages:

-You belong.
-Your ideas and hard work are valued.
-We can learn from one another.

Wildcats are so excited to share more of their outstanding work next week at our Unit 3 Publishing Parties and the Virtual Winter Program!

The countdown is on! With just 7 days until Winter Break, we are going to spend the week highlighting some of the many things that make Garrison such a special place to grow and learn.

A diverse staff of experienced, talented teachers is the key ingredient for any great school, and our Wildcats are lucky to be taught by the best of the best.

Our fifth grade teacher Ms. Sanchez was featured in this Washington Post article about the importance of hiring and retaining diverse educators – and especially Latinx teachers – who reflect the diversity of our schools and empower students and families of color to share their stories and realize big dreams.

This afternoon, Principal Kip and fourth grade teacher Ms. Social will speak before the DC Council about the importance of teacher retention. We are so grateful for our incredible teachers and so proud to be bringing attention to this important issue.

Want to help us continue to make Garrison a wonderful place to work for our wonderful teachers? Consider a year-end contribution to our PTO! Link in bio.

Our wonderful paraprofessional Ms. Mel lost her home and her possessions in a terrible house fire this weekend. And while we’re so thankful that she and her daughters and granddaughter are all safe, we know that rebuilding after a fire takes a village. Please help show our Garrison community’s love, support, and appreciation for Ms. Mel and her family during this difficult time.

If you’re able to contribute financially, all money raised on the Garrison PTO’s Go Fund Me page this week will go to Ms. Mel and her family. You can also email [email protected] if you’d like to make a tax deductible donation earmarked for Ms. Mel another way.

If you'd like to give directly to the family, you can contribute to the Go Fund Me started by Mel's daughter, Tierra.

If you have items available to donate that you think might be useful, please email [email protected].

Thank you, Wildcats, for your generosity!

Important Update for Pre-K Families!

Photos from Garrison Elementary School PTO's post 08/30/2021

…and they’re off! What a joy it was to see K-5 families safely return to S Street this morning for the first day of school! DC Public Schools

‘Twas the night before in-person school, and all through D.C., not a creature was stirring…except Principal Kip with some last minute reminders!

We are SO excited to see everyone bright and early tomorrow morning!

The Garrison school family extends far beyond the walls of our building on S Street. We are so grateful to have community partnerships that generously donate their time and resources to help our students thrive.

One such organization is Washington D.C. Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., whose members were on campus yesterday to distribute school supplies and brand-new backpacks to students as they arrived at the K-5 Sneak Peek event. Because of their generous donation, we know that every single Wildcat has the materials they need to feel ready for the first day of school. Thank you so much!

Last week's Back-to-School BBQ was a huge success! Students were reunited with old pals, teachers got a chance to connect with some of their new students, and families were able to stock up on some BTS clothes through our Mutual-Aid Clothing Swap and the PTO's Garrison Gear sale!

Missed the BBQ? Don't fret! There are two more chances to stop by before school begins:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 2-3pm: Classroom Sneak Peek for K-5 students and families.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 3:30pm: Pre-K (3 & 4) Classroom Sneak Peek and Popsicles with Principal Kip and AP Green.
