Appstate Orientation has developed a mobile application for new freshmen and transfer students called App4O. On the application, students can view the schedule of events for each orientation session, meet the orientation staff and see a long list of resources that can be used while at Appalachian. The east coast was hammered with snow over the past 24 hours! From The White House, to Boone and even all the way in Raleigh. All of these locations saw snow within the 5-7" range and it is absolutely beautiful!

Alumni Spotlight!!
This past summer, Jonathan Williams lived in the App House as he worked in the office of Senator Richard Burr. As a communication studies and public relations major, Jonathan utilized what he learned in order to better serve and assist the constituents of North Carolina, and help them connect with their Senator as well as their federal government. During his time as an intern, Jonathan worked with other North Carolina college students in answering constituent phone calls and letters, giving tours of the Capitol building to North Carolina residents and visitors, attending Senate hearings and briefings, as well as just learning about Senator Burr and all his office does for our state.

One of the most defining points of the internship was actually walking on the Senate floor and being able to stand right next to famous Senate desks, such as President Obama’s when he was a senator, President Kennedy’s, and various others going back decades in history. Overall, the internship was a learning experience and demonstrated the rich history that the Capitol and Washington, DC.

Even better than the internship was the privilege to stay at the App House. Jonathan was able to walk to the Russell Senate building every day (though walking in business professional during the DC summer wasn’t too fun), which was much better than having to take the metro in to work as many of his other interns had to do daily. The App House was a way to have a group of people who quickly become your friends right there waiting when you get home. In a place where there’s no parkway to explore and no hiking to be done (despite the great amount of walking in DC), it’s great to be surrounded by fellow Mountaineers who want to go out and explore all the city has to offer as much as you do. This mainly entailed late night runs to We the Pizza and Good Stuff Eatery, a lot of rides by Uber and the metro, Jazz in the Park, and many times spent on the National Mall. Overall, it was an awesome experience and one that leaves Jonathan ready for the next great adventure in DC, whatever it may be.

Alumni Spotlight!!
Last April, Cameron Carswell was offered a full-time position working for the American Council on Education (www.acenet.edu), a non-profit higher education advocacy group out of Dupont Circle. She works with the Vice President/Chief of Staff and Meeting Logistics Manager. Her days include everything from speech-writing and higher education research projects to managing the ACE Annual Meeting (http://www.aceannualmeeting.org/) and vetting venues in the DC area for executive functions.

Cameron lived in the App House during the first summer of her job and describes it as the perfect transition from Boone to Washington. "Although you are responsible for the daily responsibilities of being a graduate, you maintain the warm and encouraging family dynamic that was (and continues to be) so valuable and unique at App."

She says the location of the house creates Washington into an accessible opportunity to explore and learn. Since you don't have the daunting stressors of moving and adapting to a new housing environment, the App House allows you to truly absorb the city. Despite large cities notoriously isolating nature, rooming with fellow Mountaineers allowed for comraderie and fellowship for DC adventures. Having her Appalachian family there in the scary first few months after graduation made the transition to the "real world" memorable and invigorating. Thanks again to Dylan Russell for the opportunity to meet the "First Dogs" Bo and Sunny and to Paige Marley for the opportunity to share a laugh and a handshake with Vice President, Joe Biden.

Despite having lived in Washington for seven months now, she still enjoys being a tourist on the weekend. She highly recommends the App house to anyone looking to expand their horizons, tackle new and challenging opportunities, and puruse a wildly exciting culture, environment, and social scene.
