This past weekend, we recreated the iconic 1976 Judgement of Paris at DCANTER shops, pitting legendary French wines against powerhouse California picks in a completely blind tasting. 🇫🇷🆚🇺🇸 It was fun to see our tasters going through the process of swirling, sniffing, and making their ultimate guesses.
And the best part was seeing them shocked (watch till the end) with the outcome. Some were SO convinced that the French Chardonnay was the California Chardonnay. Safe to say, minds were blown, expectations were shattered!
We had a taster who said she doesn't like Chardonnay and was surprised when we said that both wines that she just tried were, in fact, made with Chardonnay grapes. 🤯 She ended up purchasing a bottle after tasting. We love it when our guests walk away with a bottle they never expected to love! 🥰🥂
At both our Capitol Hill and Alexandria shops, California took home the crown by a landslide!

What was the Judgment of Paris? In 1976, a blind tasting turned the wine world upside down. A panel of top French experts shocked everyone by rating underdog California Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons ahead of France’s finest Bordeaux and Burgundy estates. It instantly put American winemaking on the global map, particularly Napa Valley, and proved that world-class wine knows no borders!
