A Tornado Watch has been issued for the Washington DC area to include Howard University.
A Tornado Watch is in effect until 11:00 p.m. for Washington, D.C., central Maryland and northern Virginia.

A Tornado Watch means that conditions are favorable for storms capable of producing tornadoes. Nothing is necessarily imminent but stay alert and make sure you can identify a safe shelter if a warning is issued. For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

As a cold front encounters extremely humid air over the Washington region, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt this evening. Storms are likely to produce heavy downpours and lightning and may unleash localized damaging wind gusts and hail. Tornado activity cannot be ruled out.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed the D.C. area in an "enhanced" risk zone for severe storms. While a tornado is certainly possible, the primary threat is damaging winds, the Storm Prediction Center announced.

Winds could cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roads may become blocked by down trees and localized power outages are possible. Be mindful of unsecured light objects that could become projectiles and stay safe.

For more information about today's hazardous weather outlook, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 202-806-1100.

From the virtual classrooms of his freshman year to becoming a campus leader, the 47th Mr. Howard Mahlon West has truly defined what it means to make the most of every opportunity Howard has to offer! As a member of Howard's COVID class of 2024, Mahlon's journey at The Mecca began amidst the challenges of social distancing and remote learning.

Unsatisfied with the initial lack of community, Mahlon channeled his high school leadership experience into bringing students together on campus. From organizing a basketball tournament for student entrepreneurs to launching the popular Mecca Market and his own clothing brand, 'Basement Boy,' Mahlon has been a beacon of creativity and connection.

His story is a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination that defines the Howard spirit. Mahlon has not only adapted but thrived, using his roles to foster a sense of unity and belonging among his peers.

“It is important that we're exposed to different cultures that exist within Blackness and that students are willing to be open to learn and explore,” said Jenelle Howard, assistant director of the center. “To ask questions and to challenge differences so that they can grow and be better people once they leave our University.”

The event was a testament to the vibrant diasporic experiences within our community that we house here at The Mecca.
