It's hard to believe is already over! We were so fortunate to have a wonderful cohort of 14 teachers this year.

The work isn't done for us though! Our student crew has next week to finish up excavations at the McWilliams site. We'll be excavating potential features, expanding a unit, and mapping all of our excavations before we fill them back in. We still have volunteer slots open on Monday and Tuesday morning this upcoming week! Sign up below to get a chance to explore this important archaeological site.

Scenes from the last couple days of Trowels to Teaching 2026! Guest speakers Steph Soder from Maryland Historical Trust, Scott Strickland from Jefferson Patterson Park, Aaron Levinthal from Maryland DNR, and Jordan Riggs from Preservation Maryland joined us to share their expertise. Our teachers got to do some lab work assisted by Baltimore Community Archaeology Lab students, and engage in a lesson planning workshop with archaeologists from the Council for Maryland Archaeology. We are so grateful to have had such an incredible group of educators this year!

Yesterday, The Campaign’s Jordan Riggs presented at Trowels to Teaching at Towson University!
Trowels to Teaching is an applied archaeology program that brings educators, college students, and Indigenous partners together at active field sites to turn archaeological research into inclusive, place-based learning.
Jordan shared her path into historic preservation, highlighted careers in the historic trades, and discussed how The Campaign is helping build pathways into preservation careers.
We’re grateful to the Trowels to Teaching team and Digging Deeper Educational Consulting for the invitation and for bringing together educators, students, and preservation professionals to inspire the next generation.

🌞Summer for us means workshop season! Today kicked off Day 1 of our Trowels to Teaching program, now in its second year. 14 teachers have come from all over Maryland to learn how (and why!) to bring archaeology into their classrooms. Thanks to Baltimore Community Archaeology Lab for partnering with and hosting us, and to Dr. Matt McKnight and Dr. Zac Singer from Maryland Historical Trust for being amazing guest speakers!Tomorrow it's time to get our hands dirty! 🪏
