We joined the Utah State Board of Education for their Fall Youth in Care (YIC) Education Summit!
Directors stepped into their students' shoes to build and test their own catapults. Along the way, we explored what makes hands-on learning both engaging and rigorous.

We also celebrated the schools and teachers whose engagement and participation made last school year such a success. Thank you for all you do for Utah's youth!

We’re thrilled to announce UNMASKED: Hero Origins Quest, our brand-new November initiative, launching for the first time ever!

Students design an original superhero, then dig into what makes them a true hero beyond fame and power: their origin story, what their power can really do, and the mission they stand for.

Each student finishes with a Hero Card (name, superpower, and what they stand for) and a Hero Build, a 2-D or 3-D version of their hero.

✅ 6 lessons each in ELA, math, science, and social studies. Teach one subject or all four.
✅ Free facilitation guide with lesson plans, slide decks, handouts, a scoring rubric, and standards documentation
✅ You supply just paper, pencils, art materials, and printed handouts

🏆 Enter the national contest! Submissions open Nov 23 and close Nov 30, 2026. Every student who finishes gets a certificate, all submissions get written feedback, and winners receive prizes.

Want your students to 3D print bookmarks in their own font, not just the five that come with Tinkercad?

Our new tutorial walks you through the whole process: downloading a custom font, converting it to SVG, importing it into Tinker, CAD, engraving your text and getting it ready for the printer.
This is perfect for a reading celebration, a book club gift or a first 3D design project.

The results are in!
We asked a big question, “What are we missing when we don’t look closer?”. Our students showed us the answer, one insect at a time.
We received 100 entries from schools nationwide. Students built insect models from clay, cardboard, Legos and paper and wrote persuasive arguments for why their insect deserves to be seen.

October is Youth Justice Action Month!

YJAM began in 2008 as Youth Justice Awareness Month. Today it’s a nationwide movement of advocates, families, organizations and young people working toward fair, equitable youth justice systems.

This year’s theme is Building a Future Where Youth Thrive and each week has its own focus.

We’re proud to join National Youth Justice Network - NYJN and Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) in turning awareness into action. Explore events, resources and ways to get involved at youthjusticeactionmonth.org

This October, BreakFree Education invites students in juvenile justice schools and facilities across the country to make their voices, ideas and creativity, visible as part of our 2026 Youth Justice Action Month (YJAM) Art Collective.

This year’s YJAM theme is Building a Future Where Youth Thrive and we want young people to help us imagine what that future could look, sound, and feel like.

We are accepting student work until Friday, October 2nd. Every piece goes into a national digital gallery that runs all October, we’re educators and community members will leave feedback on their work.

A new Google educator group for juvenile justice teachers is here!
Educators working in juvenile justice settings face unique challenges, from limited technology access and security restrictions, to the isolation of working without a large network of educators who truly understand the environment. This new Google Educator Group is a space to connect with like-minded educators, share ideas, and resources and explore creative ways to use Google Workspace for Education to make learning more active, relevant, and meaningful for students.
The group is sponsored by Google and led by Dr. Kaylah Holland (BreakFree Education) and Erin White (Collaborative for Educational Services, MA).
The first virtual meeting will be on Saturday, October 24 at 11 AM ET.

We hope to see next month!
