ONE YEAR LATER! The same headline! Not one officer was charged in the past year for the death of Breonna Taylor! The system is working exactly as it was intended. Don’t ever forget that. If you don’t know how we got here with our system of policing, use this moment to learn. Then use that anger (and you WILL be angry) to fight harder and amplify louder. There can be no justice if there is not equal justice.

The US coronavirus case count topped 5 million August 9th! As President Donald Trump and Congress remain at an impasse over the latest emergency relief package.⁣

The country is seeing a dramatic spike in infections this summer, reaching the new milestone just over two weeks after the national case count hit 4 million, on July 23, according to a tracker maintained by John Hopkins University.⁣

Some federal health officials have attributed the surge to states rolling back their social distancing measures and lockdowns too soon, even though some that followed CDC guidelines are also reporting significant rebounds.⁣

Brazil and India, which have the second and third highest caseloads, combined have just over 5 million cases.⁣

The U.S. continues to lead the world with more than 162,000 deaths. Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb predicted on CBS on Sunday between 200,000 and 300,000 fatalities by year's end, and a new wave of cases hitting rural parts of the country.⁣

The 5 million U.S. case milestone comes as negotiations on a rescue package collapsed over the weekend, with the White House and Democrats still trillions of dollars apart on a deal. Trump on Saturday signed an executive order that he said would provide relief to Americans struggling from the economic fallout of the pandemic.⁣

The rising case counts also come as the Trump administration continues to push schools to reopen in the fall. One high school in Georgia that drew national attention for reopening on Monday with packed hallways, saw a half a dozen students and three teachers test positive for the coronavirus, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.⁣

Gottlieb backed school reopenings but urged caution, saying, "We need to have a degree of humility. Children are not immune to this virus. We have seen bad outcomes."⁣

Put on a mask 😷

A monthlong resurgence in Covid-19 cases appears to be hitting a peak, but a new assessment of the coronavirus’ trajectory is fueling conflicting interpretations about whether the worst is over.⁣

Slowing caseloads in Florida and Arizona have fanned a narrative that the worst of the disease spread is cresting in some of the nation’s worst hot spots — repeating a pattern seen in early June. But public health experts today issued new warnings that the virus is still spiraling out of control, only in the form of a rolling series of outbreaks in almost half the states, with more troubling signs in many others.⁣

The U.S. now regularly records over 60,000 coronavirus infections per day and logged its 4 millionth case today, according to a tracker from Johns Hopkins University. A new analysis of Covid-19 trends from health experts portrays a country besieged by an outbreak shifting north and toward the coasts — as one set of hot spots begin to cool, new ones emerge. Instead of finally bending the curve, infections could plateau at unmanageable rates or spiral further out of control.⁣

In a reversal, President Donald Trump earlier this week declared that the coronavirus outlook is likely to get worse before it improves. But he later inaccurately suggested that the outbreaks are limited to select areas in the South and Southwest and embraced an optimistic viewpoint during a Wednesday briefing at the White House.
