This past week, Maxwell in Washington students had the opportunity to attend a Washington Nationals game and have lunch at Lauriol Plaza. It was a great way to wrap up the semester! We are thankful for all the opportunities we had this semester, and look forward to using what we learned this semester in our future work!

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Ms. Daniella Burgi-Palomino, Co-Director of the Latin America Working Group, and Dr. Angelo Rivero Santos, Professor and Director of Academic Affairs in the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University. Both speakers had wonderful presentations on Latin America, that provided useful insights about the region. We are thankful that we were able to meet these speakers and look forward to using what we learned in our future work.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Ms. Danica Starks, Head of Multilateral Development Bank Group at Department of Commerce, and Mr. Haroon Hakimi, former Deputy Minister at Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture. The Maxwell in Washington students were able to have a wonderful discussion with these two speakers, who discussed important topics such as Russia and Afghanistan. We are thankful that we were able to meet these speakers and look forward to using what we learned in our future work.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Mr. Tristan Southard, Legislative Director for Congressman John Katko, Mr. Jeff Wu, Director of the Political Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, and Mr. Robert Daly, the Director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States. The three speakers discussed important topics. Mr. Southard discussed Congressman Katko’s current work and the importance of bipartisanship, Mr. Wu talked about the importance of Taiwan, and Mr. Daly discussed the relationship between the United States and China.We are thankful that we were able to meet these speakers and look forward to using what we learned in our future work.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Mr. Heino Klinck, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia, and Minister Jing Quan, the third-ranking leader of the Chinese Embassy. These speakers discussed the relationship between China and the United States. In addition to the speakers, the Maxwell in Washington students had the opportunity to visit the Korea Economic Institute, where they simulated the Six-Party Talks to work towards a negotiated settlement on the Korean Peninsula. We are thankful for the opportunities that we had this week, and look forward to being able to use what we learned in our future work.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Mr. Ryan Tully a Syracuse alumnus who is currently a professional staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services. He explained how he was able to get to his position from Syracuse, his experiences working in Congress, and his committee. We are thankful that we were able to meet him and look forward to making use of his insights.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Mr. Christopher Skaluba, Director of the Transatlantic Security Initiative at the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and Mr. Daniel Fata, President of Fata Advisory LLC. We are thankful that we were able to meet these speakers and look forward to being able to use their insights in our future work.

This past week Maxwell in Washington students had the privilege to hear from Mr. Nadav Zysblat, Counselor of Political Affairs at the Embassy of Israel, and Mr. Mitchell Plitnick, the President of ReThinking Foreign Policy, a blog for progressive policy in the Middle East and beyond. These speakers brought multiple perspectives on the relationship between Israel and Palestine, discussing the history, important factors, key players, and present actions, which are essential to understanding and analyzing the situation. We are thankful that we were able to meet these speakers and look forward to being able to use their insights in our future work.

This week, students had the opportunity to attend the National Press Club and hear from three very insightful speakers. They spoke on various aspects of the media such as bias, how journalism is used, commitment to facts and truth, and how to tell a story. Their insight is more relevant than ever today.

This week, students heard from the brilliant Melinda Kimble. Ms. Kimble is a Senior Fellow at the United Nations Foundation where she offers advice on development and environmental issues. Melinda discussed the implications of a changing global environment and developments leading up to COP26. She shared this graph from a New York Times article published last month. The last two weeks have been incredibly insightful and informative regarding Africa and energy. Maxwell students got to hear from senior political scientist at RAND, Michael Shurkin on a variety of trends and issues on the African continent. Marielle Harris a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies provided an in depth look at African urbanization trends. Last but not least, Steven Keil, a Maxwell alum now working at Chevron, spoke on several important international topics regarding the energy sector. The intersection of these two areas is increasingly important today and must be discuss further. University
