Program Highlights:
The Academy has successfully implemented a number of educational components which have improved the students' academic achievement. The Global Virtual Classroom, the Hip Hop Scholars, and the Truancy Crisis Program all continue to meet the goals and objectives of the enrolled students. Each of the graduating students from the Freedom Youth Academy continue to receive regular mo

netary stipends to assist them with their college budgets. We also provide assistance for students preparing for admission at the private and independent high schools with SSAT preparation. The Healthy Mind and Body component has added a spiritual aspect prepared by Dr. Henry Gaskins which examines the aspects discussed in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. This is an innovative elective course prepared to explore the baptism, dispensations, faith, love, and salvation of believers in Christianity. Hence, the third essence of a healthy mind, body, and soul personality. This aspect of the component was inspired by the students who requested to know more regarding the various religions and beliefs of biblical characters discussed in church and movies. Several of our students have been accepted into an independent exchanged program to Spain to attend high school for two-weeks where the lessons will be taught exclusively in Spanish. The Freedom Youth Academy has provided a monetary stipend for these students for their trip. The Outreach Mentoring Program has been highly successful in reaching the needs of the students, parents, and teachers in the Washington area. With the advent of the new SAT, there have been numerous calls for assistance regarding preparation for their 9th and 10th graders in anticipation of this new examination. The future looks brighter for students who are able to prepare early for this test with the goal of receiving scholarship assistance based on high scores. I am looking forward to presenting the skills, knowledge, and strategies that will meet their levels of expectations. Sponsorship:

Abolitionist Frederick Douglass was the most photographed American of the 19th century. He never smiled in a single photo to counter the notion of a happy slave.Born in 1817 in Maryland, Douglass was enslaved from birth. At age 12, he learned the alphabet from the slaveholder's wife; however, his lessons were soon discontinued under the belief that it would foster a desire for freedom. But it was already too late. Douglass continued to learn from white children and others in his neighborhood. He began to read newspapers and devoured any books he could get his hands on. Soon, he began teaching others how to read and write. More than 40 people would attend his secret lessons until it was broken up by an angry white mob.At age 16, Douglass was made to work for a brutal slave master by the name of Edward Covey, who was known as a "slave-breaker." He whipped Douglass so regularly that his wounds didn't have time to heal. The beatings were so severe that they broke his body, soul, and spirit. One day, Douglass could not take it anymore and fought back and won. Covey could have had Douglass killed, but he didn't want to risk his reputation. He never tried to beat him again.
In 1838, after several failed attempts, Douglass managed to escape slavery by boarding a north-bound train and taking it all the way to New York City. A year prior to his escape, he had met a woman named Anna Murray, who was a free black woman living in Baltimore. He fell in love with her, and she, in turn, helped him escape by providing him with a sailor's uniform, part of her savings to pay for travel expenses, identification papers, and protection papers.
Douglass later wrote about seeing New York City for the first time: "A new world had opened upon me. If life is more than breath, and the 'quick round of blood,' I lived more in one day than in a year of my slave life. I felt as one might feel upon escape from a den of hungry lions."

We are extremely proud of Gigi Gaskins she is now an honors graduate of the Fisher College of Business at ! Dr. Gaskins made the trip to Columbus, OH to see his granddaughter continue to further ’s legacy of Academic Excellence. Gigi will be moving to this summer to start her career as a financial analyst with . We know the will continue to in all that she does. Congratulations Gigi!!! 👌🏾🙏🏾♥️💜♥️🎓🥇🏆💸💰👸🏽

The Magicians enjoyed a fine year in 2019. They ended up 13-7 during the regular season, before going on to beat Burlington, 5-2 in the first round.

Today we honor a truly phenomenal woman. The entire family is seeking God’s grace and comfort as we lost an Angel on earth. Cynthia Buck lived life with passion and purpose that impacted everyone she came across. An amazing educator with the biggest heart 💜 she was truly selfless and compassionate beyond measure. We love her, and will honor her legacy by striving for excellence in all endeavors. Rest in heavenly peace. God bless her soul 🙏🏾💜💪🏾
