dence and a “discovery” model for learning. As Maria Montessori so eloquently said, “Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”

Palisades Montessori’s students interact with each other in mixed age groups in the school’s classroom and playground. Between ages 2-5, children are beginning to explore their first social relationships with each other. A mixed-age group gives young children ample opportunities to communicate, interact and teach each other. In preschool, children are having their first independent experiences outside of their homes. Palisades Montessori is a facility that looks and feels like “school”, but is based in a private home. This gives very young children extra comfort, as they build confidence in a new setting for the first time.

In our Toddler Community, we often see moments when a child is fully focused on what they are doing. Concentration is something that grows over time. In Montessori, we give children the freedom to choose their work, repeat activities they enjoy, and finish at their own pace. This helps them stay engaged and discover what interests them most. We also protect their focus by keeping the environment calm and allowing them to work without interruption.When children have time and space to concentrate, they feel capable and proud. These moments of deep focus are the foundation for all learning - and one of the most beautiful things to watch in a Montessori environment. ⭐

For our preschoolers, the first month of fall was full of new discoveries. We explored nature through doing leaf rubbings, leaf stamping, and hole-punching tiny leaves out of paper in the art area. In Practical Life, we practiced sorting pumpkins and acorns by color, scooping and pouring lentils, spooning corn kernels, tweezing kernels off of a corn cob, and hammering golf tees into a pumpkin - this has been a fan favorite, as it gives the children a means to spend their energy and make their gross and fine motor muscle groups stronger. In Social Studies, we started studying different land forms by making our own isthmuses, straits, lakes, islands, etc. The look of surprise in their eyes to see it come together is the most precious thing! 🥰

This month, the Infant Class celebrated our Black and Orange Party, which featured festive, fall-themed activities such as a colorful ice sensory bag, a fall storybook, pumpkin carving, and more! The children had a wonderful time exploring each activity and enjoying a festive snack! We also enjoyed our annual field trip to Butlers Orchard. 🍂🧡
