From 26 - 30 May 2022, the International Communication Association will hold its annual conference. The conference is scheduled to take place in Paris, France, with some presentations and panels being conducted remotely via regional hubs or individually.

The Le***an, Gay, Bis*xual, Transgender, and Q***r Studies Interest Group of the ICA welcomes submissions from scholars, activists, and communication professionals whose work addresses the issues and concerns of LGBTQ+ persons and/or applies q***r and trans* theories, q***r and trans* people of color critique, q***r transnationalism, diaspora, and migration, and/or intersectionality to various media, culture, and communication topics. We encourage a diversity of methods and theoretical approaches.

We are particularly interested in the question and critique of gender and s*xual performances, systems, discourses, and representations, especially those that animate, inform, and impinge upon the lives and understandings of LGBTQ+ persons. This is a transdisciplinary perspective because such systems and discourses occur across institutional, community, domestic, and intimate contexts; are closely connected to other social, cultural, and political practices (such as nationalism, education, or popular culture); and play a critical role in the formation and communication of individual and group identity. We encourage collaborative research and/or community projects aimed toward broader efforts in social justice.

In 2022, the ICA annual conference theme - One World, One Network‽ - invites a reimagining of communication scholarship on globalization and networks. We therefore also encourage submissions that speak to the way globalization and networks shape and reshape dynamics of LGBTQ+ identities, spaces, and politics. Given the geographical context of the conference, we also welcome submissions that address how intersections between gender, s*xuality, and s*x are produced and constituted in and across France, its territories, and its former colonies.

FORMATS

The Interest Group welcomes quality research in these areas, using any methodological approach. We only accept (i) extended abstracts and (ii) panel proposals. For an example of an extended abstract, please contact the group co-chairs.

Extended abstracts ~ should be between 1,500-3,000 words, including notes and references. We welcome both completed research and works in progress, but you MUST clearly indicate if a proposal is a work in progress in the title (by adding “WORK IN PROGRESS”), and what material you expect to add by the time of the conference. An extended abstract MUST clearly include Background (information on your topic and context, plus a discussion of relevant literature), Theory (including theoretical concepts or key theorists), Method (data collection and analysis approaches), and Findings (can be preliminary, expected findings, or potential implications of findings). Submissions will be judged on: Theoretical/Conceptual Framework; Relevance/Adequacy of Literature Review; Methodological Soundness; Development of Overall Argument; Relevance of Topic/Discussion to LGBTQ Studies Interest Group.

Panel proposals ~ should include a minimum of five (5) papers. We also welcome high-density panels, which have six (6) or more papers. Provide a 500-600-word abstract describing the panel overall and the rationale that explains a coherent logic for having these papers presented together, as well as a 200-word abstract for each participant’s contribution. A panel will only be scheduled if, in sum, it presents more a compelling presentation than combining individual submissions in the same amount of available time. Panel proposals should include contributors from at least two different countries, feature gender balance, and include not more than one contributor from a single faculty, department, or school. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria: Theoretical/Conceptual Framework; Innovativeness of Panel; Cohesiveness of Panel; Relevance of Topic/Discussion to LGBTQ Studies Interest Group. If your panel is of particular relevance to the conference theme, you may consider submitting it to the theme coordinators as a theme session instead.

NEW FOR 2022 - MULTI-LINGUAL SUBMISSIONS:

Submissions are invited in languages preferred by scholars. Provisions will be made to provide automated or human-in-the-loop translations for purposes of review and for audiences. If submitting in another language besides English, please list in parenthesis of the title.

NEW FOR 2022 - DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT:

Contributors of individual and panel submissions are invited to submit a diversity self-assessment at the end of their submission. Further details of what should be reflected in this assessment can be found at: https://www.icahdq.org/page/ICA22CFP.

EXCLUSIONS

– We will not consider previously published or in-press submissions, or submissions from or including the current co-chairs of the ICA LGBTQ Studies Interest Group.

– No proposal may be submitted simultaneously to any other ICA Division or Interest Group.

– You can submit no more than **one single-authored** proposal to the LGBTQ Studies Interest Group. You can submit one (and only one) additional proposal to our Interest Group as a second author of a paper or as a presenter on a panel submission.

TOP PAPERS/TRAVEL AWARDS

Based on feedback from the review process, our Awards and Nominations Committee may confer top paper awards for two papers, typically a top faculty and top student paper. We will also offer five conference registration waivers, where at least one of them will be awarded to a scholar resident in a Tier B or C country (see http://www.icahdq.org/page/tiers) and another one to a student participant. When available, we may offer travel awards based on the criteria of our financial donors. In order to be considered for any award, the recipient must be a member of the Interest Group.

VOLUNTEER TO REVIEW - PLEASE READ

The LGBTQ Studies Interest group seeks to address issues of equity and justice in academic life. Therefore, it is highly recommended that persons submitting proposals also offer their service as potential submission reviewers. Reviewing offers a great opportunity to access cutting-edge research in the field, and allows you to help share the burden of unpaid labor that this vital work represents. As additional incentive, ICA has a High Quality Reviewer Award, which comes with a free conference registration (the winner will be selected from reviewers nominated by each ICA group/division), and LGBTQ Studies will also award two top reviewer awards.

Whether you are an author or not of a submission for the next ICA conference, you are welcome to review. Graduate students are also eligible to serve as reviewers, as are non-ICA members, although we encourage you to join or renew your membership! We generally assign no more than 2 or 3 submissions to review. To review, register yourself in the ICA submission site at the time of submission or contact the co-chairs to express interest. Remember to list your specific areas of expertise in subject matter and method.

** Please note that the paper submission system does not automatically roll over reviewers from the most recently held conference to the upcoming conference, so that means that you need to add yourself to the reviewer pool for each new conference if you intend to serve as a reviewer. **
