Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School

This year, Yu Ying launched our first First Lego League (FLL) Robotics teams. Huge shoutout and appreciation to Amy Hariani (YY parent) for her dedication for launching this program. And lots of thanks to our parent volunteers and DCI mentors. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Across all programs, teams exercised the FLL core values at practices and final competitions, ensuring that learning, collaboration, and character-building were at the core of robotics. Through this hands-on experience, our older teams built and coded robots while also working on an innovation project where they identified a problem faced by archaeologists and proposed a solution that could help. Through building and learning about real-world topics, our younger teams built foundational skills, like critical thinking and collaboration. We look forward to another fun-filled robotics season next year!

This week, some of Class of 2026 Yu Ying alumni returned to campus to visit former teachers, reconnect with friends, and share advice with our 5th graders. Seeing the thoughtful, accomplished young people they’ve become is one of the clearest reflections of the impact of a Yu Ying education.

During their visit, we were thrilled to hear about the many Senior Awards they earned, recognizing everything from exemplifying IB learner traits and academic diligence to being named DP Student of the Year. We were especially proud to learn that, among DCI’s graduating seniors, four valedictorians and three salutatorians were Yu Ying alumni.

Yu Ying families showed up loud and proud to the DC Council meeting today to demand that ALL public school students get equal funding next year, including the city’s nearly 50,000 public charter school students.

Together, we raised more than $174K to support our new teacher salary scale beginning next school year.

You can thank our Yu Ying Girl Scouts, led by a kindergartener’s idea, for organizing an Earth Day street clean-up. The girls were so proud to care for their community, and we’re grateful to the GS volunteers who joined them!
