Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School

Washington Yu Ying PCS is a Chinese-immersion, public charter, International Baccalaureate World Sch

Washington Yu Ying was founded by parents in 2008 on two simple premises: 1. Fluency in more than one language develops a greater ability to communicate with and to understand other cultures; and 2. Mandarin Chinese—spoken by one in five people worldwide—is an important language for American children to learn, especially as U.S. economic and political connections to China become increasingly intertwined.

Last week on Thursday, we welcomed two math education leaders from Stanford, Dr. Jo Boaler and Cathy Williams. On Thursday, they visited math lessons throughout classes across our school. These observations helped inform our day of professional learning on Friday with them, as we reinforced some really big ideas and actions for Yu Ying:
1. Everyone is a mathematician and is capable (mathematical mindset).
2. Making mistakes is so important to learning. Learn from and with mistake making.
3. Exploring BIG IDEAS/Concepts is critical in maths understanding.
4. Being flexible with strategizing and being able to articulate one’s thinking processing are CRITICAL for math understanding. What is a different approach or way to come up with an answer than your first way?
5. Maths is visual, with patterns everywhere!
6. Estimation is one of the most important things we can do, as a first step in problem solving. Before setting out to solve a problem, first think about an approximate result.

With our school-wide mathematics focus this year, the energy of this collective learning and big concept exploration was incredible. We are so grateful to have had this opportunity to dig deeper into math inquiry!
