Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) provides scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of US undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich diversity of the US population. Since 2010, FEA has awarded more than 900 scholarships totaling over $3 million.

FEA has come a long way since our founding in 2010!

Our very first application cycle in 2011 saw a total of 126 applications, 11 volunteer reviewers, and 8 awarded scholars. Compare that to our recently-closed Winter/Spring 2027 cycle – over 2200 applications, which are currently under review by 122 intrepid reviewers!

We are grateful for the support of all of our volunteers who help make our scholarships possible. We couldn’t do this work without them!

FEA Through the Years: Scholar Highlight 🌏

Back in 2018, FEA Scholars Truc V. and Jonelle T. both headed to Asia, Truc to intern at a product design startup in Hong Kong and Jonelle to study abroad in Kyoto, Japan. Eight years later, both are thriving engineers whose careers were shaped by those experiences.

For Truc, her time in Hong Kong caught the attention of employers and led to an internship and four years at Apple. She's now a Mechanical Engineer at Google working on the Pixel phone, and she still looks back on her summer abroad as a "formative experience."

For Jonelle, deciding to study abroad meant facing her fears, both financial and personal. That leap changed how she views fear, and today she's a Supplier Quality Engineer who travels for work and for fun, from Iceland to her great-grandparents' hometown in Italy.

As we celebrate 16 years of making international education accessible, we're so proud of where our scholars have gone. Read their full stories in the photos!

We just closed our 25th scholarship application cycle, and it was our BIGGEST spring cycle yet! 🌍 FEA received 2,211 applications from students hoping to study abroad in Spring '27.

But as the need for scholarships grows, so does the gap. Only an estimated 3% of FEA's applicants will receive the funding they need to make their study abroad dreams a reality.

We wish we could give every student a scholarship, but right now, that's not possible. With your help, we can reach more of them. 💛

Consider donating to FEA's General Scholarship Fund to help us close the gap. https://fundforeducationabroad.org/donate/
