CUA Anthropology Department
The Anthropology Department offers a unique combination of small classes and big opportunities.
The Anthropology Department at CUA offers undergraduate majors and minors in both anthropology and archaeology. We offer rigorous academic training, hands-on experiential learning, and advanced research opportunities in a discipline that is truly global in scope. The study of anthropology at Catholic University is holistic, integrating environmental, economic, political, social, and expressive information to form composite pictures of human social life and cultures.

At the beginning of this semester, CUA's Anthropology Department officially merged with the History Department as part of a wide-ranging re-organization of the School (now College) of Arts and Sciences. The Anthropology major and minor will continue as before, but under the umbrella of the new Department of History and Anthropology. We're excited about the opportunities this re-organization is providing for both Anthropology faculty and students. However, in recognition of this new structure we will not be posting new Anthropology news on this page; we'll keep it accessible as an archive, but all new Anthropology news and events, like tomorrow's Flannery-Herzfeld talk on the Cultural Heritage of Native America featuring Sam Holley-Kline, will be shared here:

ππ This summer, Dr. Josh Samuels (Department of History & Anthropology) traveled to Italy to conduct ethnographic fieldwork, visiting experimental farms to study how winemakers are using historic techniques and crop varieties to adapt to climate change.
While in Tuscany, he also caught up with Archaeology & Classics double-major Nate Erb, who was hard at work at the Etruscan site of Poggio Civitate. Dr. Samuels even brought Nate his very own excavation trowel! πΊβ¨
Their work highlights the many ways Catholic University students and faculty are engaging with history, culture, and climate challenges on a global stage.

Did you know the incoming chief of MI6 has a background in anthropology? Anthropologists have often worked for military agencies, which has sometimes spurred ethical debates within the discipline.
Blaise Metreweli appointed as MI6's first female chief Blaise Metreweli joined the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) in 1999 and will become its 18th chief.
