Paper Airplanes 03/19/2020

Hi folks,

I hope you are all well and beginning to settle into your new routines!! Our everyday lives have changed dramatically in so many ways, and I’d like to address a few of these changes that relate to preparing for a career in the health fields.

Academics
As you know, all classes, including lab classes, have been moved online for the rest of the semester. Health professional programs (medical/dental/pharmacy/veterinary schools, PA/PT programs) recognize and accept that this must occur, so please don’t worry about how this might affect your future application.

Online classes require a slightly different skill set than in-person classes. Communication will be KEY! Please reach out to your professors early and often. Reach out to your classmates to discuss concepts and form study sessions, if you have not already. Together we can get through this!!

Clinical/Research/Community Service
Many of your activities have likely either been canceled or you have moved away from DC and are no longer able to volunteer.

Consider that most organizations rely on college students and retired folks as volunteers; retired people are especially vulnerable and should self-quarantine and college students, like you, have mostly gone home. This leaves many organizations with a huge need for volunteers.

So how can you help?

First, your most important consideration should be to keep yourself and your family healthy. Whatever you choose to do, please practice social distancing and good hygiene, as well as any other public health recommendations in your area.

Focus Locally
Be an active, helpful member of your home community.
- Volunteer to cover childcare needs for neighbors
- Check in (by phone/from a distance) on elderly neighbors.
- If you’re part of a religious community, see if there are ways that you can provide support through them.
- Check with organizations where you have volunteered in the past to see if you can step back into previous roles. Their current volunteers have probably gone home and they may need you 
- Volunteer to pick up groceries/supplies for those in need.
- Give blood. There is shortage in blood supplies and willing, eligible donors are needed. Check with your local Red Cross or redcrossblood.org
- Check local schools or homeless shelters. Many children rely on schools for meals, and areas are setting up locations where children and their families can pick up food. Shelters need volunteers to prepare and distribute food.
- Check idealist.org or volunteermatch.org for other local opportunities, but be prepared for a slow response

Volunteer Virtually
- Tutor others. Elementary, middle and high schools have also moved online. Help them learn the science/math/other topic that you have mastered : https://www.paper-airplanes.org/
- https://www.dosomething.org/us/articles/9-places-to-volunteer-online-and-make-a-real-impact

- Podcasts, Top 10 Podcasts for Premedical Students: https://www.diversemedicine.com/top-10-podcasts-for-premeds/
- Read books! I have a great list if you’re interested. The list include: When Breath Becomes Air, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Being Mortal, The Emperor of All Maladies, Teeth: Beauty, Inequality, and the Struggle for Oral Health in America, and more 

Self-Care

Finally, I have created a forum on the Premedical Community Blackboard page to list any opportunities that you come across in your area. If you are interested, I can also create a forum for folks to share ideas, information about classes, etc.

Remember, your first priorities are your safety and your classes! Please stay safe, keep yourself and your families healthy, and please let me know if I can be of help! I am available by email and Skype at [email protected] and you can schedule an appointment with me at https://askcasau.youcanbook.me/

Take care!!

Unpaid Research at NIH
Research Assistant Volunteer
Section on Growth and Obesity
Laboratory of Jack Yanovski, MD, PhD

The Section on Growth and Obesity at the National Institutes of Health is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate student to assist with two of our studies: The Children’s Growth and Behavior Study (15-CH-0096) and the Mobile Attention Retraining in Overweight Female Adolescents (17-CH-0014).

The Children’s Growth and Behavior Study examines how eating behaviors contribute to weight gain and associated health conditions among children and adolescents. This is a longitudinal study involving observations of eating behaviors, psychiatric and sleep assessments, and cognitive evaluations, among others. The Mobile Attention Retraining study seeks to understand the relationship between eating patterns and the brain’s reactions to different images of food. The purpose is to see if a 2-week smartphone program can help retrain teenage girls’ attention biases away from unhealthy foods towards healthier food. The study involves an MRI scan, several magnetoencephalography scans (MEG), interviews to assess eating behavior, and laboratory test meals. For more information on both studies, you can visit www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Duties for both visits include participant recruitment, data collection and entry, and administrative and clerical responsibilities. In addition, highly motivated individuals in this position will have the opportunity to assist with patient visits. This competitive and highly regarded position is ideal for students considering careers in public health, psychology, or medicine. The successful applicant will have a solid academic record and will be extremely detailed-oriented and responsible.

This is an unpaid position and will require at least 15 hours per week of time in the lab.

Applicants for the summer position must be able to commit to work a minimum of 3 full work days (~8 hours/day).

Applicants for the academic year position must be able to commit to a full year (beginning in August or September 2020 and continuing through the academic semesters to July 2021), minimum 2 full work days a week (~8 hours/day).

If interested, please send a CV/resume, cover letter, and application to Research Coordinator, Taylor Swanson ([email protected]).
