Georgetown's location in the nation's capital - an international crossroads, home of the renowned National Institutes of Health, and one of the world's most culturally exciting cities - certainly makes it unique. More distinguishing, however, is Georgetown's philosophy. The School of Medicine is heir to the long and rich Catholic and Jesuit tradition of caring for the sick. From its inception, Geo

rgetown has been committed to the pursuit of knowledge in service of the community. The Georgetown medical experience is centered in "cura personalis" - care for the psychological, spiritual, social as well as physical well being of the person. It lays the groundwork for the intellectual and ethical formation of physician healers committed to the clinically competent care of and the well being of their patients and dedicated to the health needs of the under-served in our society. This philosophy finds expression in research and in scholarship, in the dialogue of science and service, as well as in the dialogue of faith and technology.

Responding to a critical need, the Student Emergency Fund was conceived by the Philanthropy Committee of the Medical Alumni Board in 2024, and made possible through the generosity of Francis Jay Crosson, M.D. (C'66, M'70). The Student Emergency Fund supports Georgetown medical students in need of financial assistance should they be faced with an unanticipated emergency.

We are deeply grateful to our alumni whose generosity helps care for the next generation of physicians.

On April 28, the Medical Alumni Board and Medical Student Alumni Ambassadors welcomed students, alumni, faculty, and residents to the 18th Annual Specialty Showcase at the Wagner Alumni House.

This year's event brought together first-, second-, and third-year medical students with more than 60 alumni, faculty, and MedStar Georgetown volunteers representing a record-breaking 24 specialties, creating opportunities for mentorship, networking, and career exploration.

A special thank you to School of Medicine leadership, alumni, MedStar residents, and attending physicians who shared their time, expertise, and guidance with the next generation of Hoyas in medicine.

We're grateful to everyone who helped make this year's Specialty Showcase a success and look forward to seeing you next year!

This April, alumni, university leaders, faculty, and friends of Georgetown gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for John Carroll Weekend 2026.

A highlight of the weekend was Called to Heal: Faith, Service, and Global Health, a thought-provoking conversation exploring how medicine, policy, and service intersect to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

Moderated by Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, the panel examined how interdisciplinary collaboration, global governance, and Georgetown’s Jesuit values are shaping efforts to advance health equity around the world.

Featured panelists included:

🔹 Ronald A. Mercier, S.J. – Provincial of the Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus

🔹 Nalini Anand, JD, MPH – Managing Director, Georgetown Global Health Institute

🔹 Matthew S. Kavanagh, PhD – Director, Center for Global Health Policy & Politics; Associate Professor of Global Health and Visiting Professor of Law

Thank you to our panelists for sharing their insights and inspiring us to continue answering the call to serve.

We hope to see many more of our medical alumni at John Carroll Weekend 2027 in San Diego, April 1 - 4!
