Today “The Risk to Democracy” with Michael J. Abramowitz: President of Freedom House.

There has been a troubling rise in the number of authoritarian leaders and regimes around the world.

We have seen some of the impact with war in Europe, increased tensions in Asia, and the restriction of long-standing rights for many people.

In this special Fireside Chat event, we will assemble at the University Club in Washington DC to try to understand the reasons why the world has turned so authoritarian, what the future might bring, and how the HBS DC Alumni community might impact this outcome?

Upcoming event at HBS DC: “Break the Rulles!” With John Mullins.

In his latest book, Break the Rules!, John Mullins draws on 20 years of field research to build a compelling argument that successful entrepreneurs exhibit one or more of six mindsets that allow them to challenge assumptions, overcome obstacles, mitigate risk and, sometimes, change the world. Surprisingly, however, these mindsets run counter to the conventional wisdom that’s typically found in large and well-established companies. They fly in the face of what’s taught in business schools about strategy, core competencies, target marketing, financing and more.

In an intimate and highly interactive case-study-driven format via Zoom, John’s workshop will bring to life the six counter-conventional mindsets that enable iconic entrepreneurs like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, AirTel’s Sunil Bharti Mittal, Tesla’s Elon Musk and others to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves along the entrepreneurial path. Entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses faster and the people who work for them owe it to themselves to understand, embrace, and master these seldom-discussed mindsets.

Putin’s Road to War examines what led the Russian leader, the West and the world to this dangerous tipping point. From acclaimed filmmaker Michael Kirk and his award-winning team, the documentary traces how Putin went from low-ranking KGB agent to longtime Russian president. The film delves into Putin’s crackdown on dissent — and the media — inside Russia. It reveals how, driven by grievances towards the West and a desire to expand Russia’s footprint, he has tested the West’s appetite for confrontation over and over again, including by annexing Ukraine’s Crimea region in 2014. And it raises difficult questions about the path forward from here.

In this 1 hour event, Michael Kirk will talk about his experiences and findings while making the film, followed by Q&A.

Two years ago, Gretchen Howard joined Robinhood Markets, the stock-trading start up whose lofty goal was to “democratize finance,” as its vice president of operations. Howard, whose past work experience included roles at Fidelity and as a venture capitalist at Google, embraced her new role with gusto. Always one to roll up her sleeves and get into the trenches, Howard saw the opportunity to build the next great company alongside Robinhood’s founders Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt.

Since becoming the company’s COO, she has set aggressive goals for herself and for the company, including recruiting the company’s first Chief Product Officer, growing the company’s Customer Experience division and attracting more women to the platform.

Gretchen Howard will join the Harvard Business School Club of NY to give an overview of Robinhood, her role as COO, and the challenges & opportunities that await Robinhood. Join us for this sure-to-be insightful conversation from one of the most distinguished leaders in fintech today.
