Transforming your life from employee to entrepreneur | Create your own economy through short form content. The next cohort for this course begins in January.

Serving with excellence has always been my goal - particularly in ASL-English (voice) interpreting. My driving force is to do everything I possibly can to ensure that when I am working into English, I distinctly and accurately deliver the Deaf consumerโ€™s source message. I am excited to share with you that I am now teaching a 5-week course to remind us to practice the essential skills necessary to

Grateful for a brand new Saturday morning. Knowing all is well and in Divine order!

I joined the cohort-based course, Ship 30 for 30, with Dickie Bush ๐Ÿšข & Nicolas Cole ๐Ÿšข๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ!! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพ

Here are a few reasons why:

โ€ข Responding to direct requests: colleagues, emerging interpreters and curious friends have been asking me to write about this topic forever
โ€ข Experiencing joy: I love writing plus I love thinking and talking about my work; I thought it would be fun to combine the two
โ€ข Thriving in community: is a fun, thoughtful, amazingly caring and supportive community where novice and experienced writers publish 30 pieces in 30 days. Such a blessing for me as an external processor!

Over the next 30 days (and beyond..) I'll write about:

โœ… ASL Interpreting, what it takes to master ASL to English (aka "voicing") get certified and take your career to the next level.
โœ… Using time well, how working in 5 minute blocks can overcome resistance (aka fear) and move mountains
โœ… Making a difference, why it's important to do something you love as often as possible

What's in it for you ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿš€ What's the roadmap to being a great ASL to English (voice) interpreter and why it matters.
๐Ÿš€ How learning ASL interpreting strategies and understanding how ASL interpreters listen will make people pay more attention to you and make you a better speaker
๐Ÿš€ Why breaking things into tiny chunks serves you in achieving your goals

I'm excited to share what I know online. Join me on this adventure โ€”let me know what questions or curiosities you have! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ

Mentor: a trusted counselor or guide.

Jan Nishimura.

The embodiment and personification thereof.

Over the course of her more than half a century career, Jan touched the lives of hundreds of ASL-English interpreters directly, and thousands by extension, through all of the lives our lives have touched.

I dare not to attempt to quantify the multiple thousands of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and families her precise, specific and exemplary work had an impact upon.

Jan was joyous, jovial and judicious.

Jan was admirable, amenable and affable.

Jan was noteworthy, noncompetitive and no nonsense.

As a nascent professional, like scores of my colleagues, Jan opened the doors of the agency she owned and welcomed me.

She gave me, and so many of us, our first opportunities as professionals in the field of interpreting here in the greater Washington metropolitan area.

She nurtured us.

She instructed us.

She guided us.

She taught us.

She counseled us.

She promoted us.

She loved us.

She challenged us.

She championed us.

She fought for us.

She fought alongside us.

She modeled for us what it meant to be a colleague and a friend.

Jan practiced inclusion before it was a thing. She modeled equity in every choice she made because she understood at a fundamental level how much richer the world is when everyone's knowledge, skills and abilities are valued, respected and allowed to flourish.

I am forever indebted to Jan Nishimura and I pledge to do my best to pay forward, in some small way, what her life has meant to mine.

Bless you Mama Jan.

Rest in peace and power.
