The Bachelor of Arts in English broadens and deepens a student’s understanding of the English language; American and British literature; and develops skills in analytical thinking, creative and persuasive writing, critical reading, and research. The English major prepares students for teaching (at the secondary level) and has long been regarded as appropriate baccalaureate preparation for careers in law, medicine, business, and government.

Robeson’s championing of civil rights, the rights of workers, and his outspoken left-wing views brought him into direct conflict with the right-wing authors of the U.S.’ Red Scare, who sought to punish him—and succeeded.
