that over 60 years ago, many southern states fiercely resisted school desegregation, even after the Supreme Court ordered it? Virginia led this resistance, impacting countless students and leaving a lasting mark on history.
The term "Massive Resistance" was coined by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd Sr., a conservative Democrat and former governor. Byrd's strong opposition to federal intervention in state affairs and his racial views resonated with his supporters in Southside Virginia, driving the movement.
The documentary "Locked Out: The Fall of Massive Resistance," produced by the University of Virginia Center for Politics and WCVE PBS Richmond, premiered at the Robert Russa Moton Museum 15 years ago. It delves into this intense period through powerful interviews and personal stories. Discover how past struggles for equality shape our world today. 🎥✊🏾

It has been described as a rich tapestry for exploring African Americans past and present and its complexity as the foundation of African American life and history. A panel will discuss these ideas and perspectives including family traditions, brothers and sisters, power-couples, and community. Moderated by Ida E. Jones, University Archivist at Morgan State University, panelists include Allison Parker, author of Unceasing Militant: The Life of Mary Church Terrell; Darius Young, author of Robert R. Church Jr. and the African American Political Struggle; John Whittington Franklin and Karen Roberts Franklin, Franklin Global LLC, Managing Members; and Barbara Spencer Dunn, ASALH Vice President for Membership & Contributor and Member of the Black History 365 (BH365) Professional Development Team.
