Two School of Health seniors spent the summer in East Africa examining global health and health equity through the eyes of the people there. Jordan Pai (H'27) and Kayla Wontumi (H'27) received the 2025-2026 Maeve Kennedy McKean Global Health Award to conduct faculty-mentored international fieldwork.

In Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, a region world-famous for producing elite marathoners, Pai explored how to get people interested in running. He found that "nobody runs by themselves" and hopes to use his interviews to develop a public health campaign encouraging more people to run.

In Zanzibar, Tanzania, Wontumi studied maternal mental health across six rural clinic sites with WAJAMAMA, a nonprofit founded by nurse-midwife alumna Nafisa Jiddawi (NHS'14). "So often in health studies, provider perspectives are prioritized," she noted, "but we need to listen directly to those receiving care as well."

Beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year, Georgetown University’s School of Health will offer expanded tuition support for eligible veterans and military-connected students pursuing graduate degrees through the Yellow Ribbon Program.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a collaboration between Georgetown and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs . It covers tuition that exceeds Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits. Students eligible for those benefits and enrolled in a degree-seeking program qualify.

"Those who have served our nation have made extraordinary contributions to the common good, and we have a responsibility to ensure that their commitment to service is met with meaningful opportunity," said Dean Christopher J. King.

Georgetown's School of Health has named Matthew M. Kavanagh, PhD, chair of the Department of Global Health.

Kavanagh directs Georgetown's Center for Global Health Policy & Politics and previously served as deputy executive director and special advisor at UNAIDS. His research examines how law and politics produce inequality, particularly in pandemics and outbreaks from HIV/AIDS to Ebola and COVID-19, and how policies and institutions can better prevent and respond to future health crises.

Dean Christopher J. King calls him "an accomplished scholar, a thoughtful leader."

Kavanagh succeeds Jennifer Huang Bouey, MD, PhD, MPH, who has positioned the department for continued growth and success since 2021. Kavanagh says he is "honored to have the opportunity to lead the Department of Global Health in this global moment of rupture and transformation" and build on the foundation Bouey and their colleagues established.
