The John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative (FPPI) carries forth the legacy of Senator McCain by advocating for hostages and political prisoners around the world. Held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years, Senator McCain emerged as a vocal advocate for all wrongfully detained individuals.

In 2025, the McCain Institute created the John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative to support the release and recovery of hostages and political prisoners globally.

Over the last year, FPPI advocated for the release of several individuals including Americans held hostage in Gaza, Belarusian musician and activist Maria Kalesnikava, Venezuelan democracy activist Jesús Armas, and Chinese pastor Ezra Jin. FPPI continues to fight for the freedom of Georgian journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli, Swedish-Iranian academic Ahmadreza Djalali, Russian opposition politician Alexei Gorinov, Hong Kong democracy advocate Jimmy Lai, and Chinese pastor Gao Quanfu and his wife Pang Yu.
