On Friday, January 30th, the Georgetown Japan Dialogue Forum, a student-led organization at Georgetown that discusses Japan–U.S. policy, welcomed Ryo Kiridori, a research fellow at Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies, with a great turnout and an inspiring discussion on Japan’s recent defense developments. This event was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Thank you to the amazing speakers and participants, and please keep an eye out for upcoming JDF events!

Professor Divya Cherian (Princeton University), visited campus last Wednesday for her talk "Before Primitivity and Indigeneity: What is the History of Tribe in India Before Colonialism?", where she reconsidered the relationship between caste and tribe and reflected on how these long histories shape contemporary understandings of identity and indigeneity in the region.

We had a great turnout at our event on Monday October 27th, "Japan's Political Upheaval and Its Impact on Foreign Policy"! Thank you to our amazing speakers, Mr. Ken Moriyasu from Nikkei and Mr. Takashi Imai from Yomiuri Shimbun, and all attendees who have come to join the discussion on current Japanese domestic politics.
This was the first Japan event of the academic year hosted by our Visiting Teaching Professor Sheila Smith in Modern and Contemporary Japanese Politics. Please keep a look out for more events ahead.

ASP core faculty Professor Victor Cha was a keynote speaker at the inaugural of Canada's Indo Pacific Forum held in Ottawa this week. He spoke on changing geopolitical dynamics and the US alliance architecture in the Indo Pacific.

This past Monday, Georgetown University and the Embassy of the Philippines formalized an academic cooperation through the signing of a Donation Agreement for the Advancing of Philippine Studies. Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel G. Romualdez and Georgetown University Vice Dean for Undergraduate Affairs Mark Giordano signed the formal document.
Under this agreement, the Embassy will provide a financial contribution to support research, events, and academic activities related to the Philippines within GU's Asian Studies Program and Global Human Development Program.
ASP core faculty member Christine Kim and two of her undergraduate students, Jie Xin Ching ('26) and Emma Zhu ('28), from her course "Asia in Washington" were able to participate in the ceremony.
This signing marks a new chapter in collaboration with GU and will highlight the Philippines role in Asia and the global community. Read the complete press release through the link in our bio!

A fantastic turnout this morning for the Abe Memorial Lecture on The Future of Global Diplomacy and the Indo-Pacific
The event was introduced by Dr. Thomas Banchoff, Vice President of Global Engagement at Georgetown University. We were honored to host Ambassador Shigeo Yamada and Dr. Kurt Campbell for a thought-provoking discussion moderated by Dr. Evan Medeiros.
The conversation about the evolving landscape of global diplomacy and the importance of the Indo-Pacific region was insightful and engaging.
