Following a nationwide search that began early in the fall semester, Gonzaga is proud and pleased to announce Mr. Terry Kernan ‘08 as the school’s next Athletic Director.

An educator by vocation and a model servant leader, Mr. Kernan has been serving as Assistant Athletic Director and is also a long-standing member of Gonzaga’s math department. “I am honored to follow in the footsteps of my friend, mentor, and coach, Joe Reyda,” says Mr. Kernan. “I look forward to leading the young men and coaches of Eye Street as we uphold and build upon our tradition of excellence on and off the playing field.”

Mr. Kernan’s dedication to Jesuit education, extensive knowledge of the WCAC and strong, pre-existing relationships with our athletic programs will serve him well. He will continue to work closely with Assistant Headmaster for Student Life, Mr. Jim Kilroy, who describes Terry as “a loyal, committed educator at heart.”

Two top NFL prospects and one epic title game: When Caleb Williams and Olu Fashanu were high school teammates 10/20/2023

🦅🏈 | "How Caleb Williams [‘21] and Olu Fashanu [‘20] Can Make History Together" [AGAIN]
Heather Dinich released a great article for ESPN yesterday! 🔗 Click the link to read the full piece - https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/38682253/caleb-williams-olu-fashanu-high-school-nfl-draft-history🔗
In the video intro 🎥 at the top of article, states:
"Penn State offensive lineman, Olu Fashanu and USC quarterback, Caleb Williams, made history as high school teammates in 2018 at Gonzaga College High School, when they helped lead the Eagles to the school's first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title in 16 years.

Now, they could make history again for the high school as two top five NFL draft picks for the first time in at least 20 years, according to ESPN stats and information group, maybe EVER if that happens.

I took a trip to Washington, DC to talk to their high school coach, Randy Trivers, and see what prints they left there, and they are everywhere: Caleb Williams has a locker dedicated to him. His jersey has been retired in the gym. There are pictures of Olu and Caleb in their office from newspaper clippings from that 2018 team all over the place.

Their history at that high school will forever tie them together. But we'll learn soon this spring if their futures will do the same."

“Coach Singh Honored as Track Coach of the Year”
Congratulations to Conrad Singh '00, who was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's DC High School Coach of the Year last month.

One boys coach and one girls coach from 50 states – as well as the District of Columbia – were honored for their successes during the spring 2023 season. Among the factors taken into consideration were team score and placement at the state championships, margin of victory, performance against rankings if available, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years (e.g. first title in school history, consecutive titles, etc.).

This year’s team finished in second place in the DCSAA Championship for the second straight year, and moved up one spot in the WCAC Championship from 2022 to take fourth place. Additionally, in Coach Singh’s second year as head coach, the team set three school records and won a prestigious Penn Relays Wheel for the first time since 2009 and only third time in program history.

Congratulations Coach Singh!

Over a dozen Gonzaga athletic coaches and trainers spent time last week volunteering at the Father McKenna Center in the basement of St. Aloysius Church.

In addition to supporting the check-in table and preparing and serving meals, they worked in the center's food pantry.

“Joe and I talked often about fostering a community of coaches, and at Gonzaga, there’s no better way to do that than by serving alongside one another - especially when the cause is as worthy as what the stands for.

We look forward to a years worth of service in the athletic department as different teams perform their own service projects.

A special thank you to volunteer coordinator Emily Dold as well for welcoming our group.”
—Mr. Jim Kilroy, Assistant Headmaster for Student Life

🏌️‍♂️ This week, Carson Looney ‘25 made a deep run in the United States Junior Amateur Golf Tournament ( ) in Daniel Island, SC. With his former Gonzaga teammate Wyatt Croog ‘23 as his caddie, the pair made it to the Round of 16 in the historic golf tournament.

This year, the US Junior Am began in May with 4,261 entries. An international field of junior golfers tried to qualify at 59 tournament sites across the country for the main event. Beginning on Monday, July 24, the 264 remaining players competed in two rounds of stroke play to narrow the field to 64 golfers. Carson posted rounds of 71 and 73 to make the cut and advance to this stage.

From there, players competed in a head to head match play format, similar to the NCAA tournament bracket. In his first match on Wednesday, Carson was three down with three to play before winning three straight holes to force a playoff where he won on the 20th hole. On Thursday in the round of 32, he won his morning match 5&4 before having a difficult afternoon matchup in the Sweet 16 where he lost a tight match 2&1.

Congratulations to Carson and Wyatt on this great run in the Junior Am!

On Sunday, the Washington Post published a ranking of high school sports programs in the area, recognizing Gonzaga as the region’s top boys private school athletic program during the 2022-2023 school year.

“Hail Gonzaga,” the story said. “The Northwest D.C. school was competitive in just about every sport, even in the ever-competitive WCAC.” The honor was a fitting tribute to the program that late Athletic Director Joe Reyda ‘85 oversaw, supported, and helped to build over his 22 years leading the department.

Gonzaga edged St. John's by earning 126 points from All-Met selections (one Player of the Year - soccer's Daniel Bollman '26, two Coach of the Year selections - swimming's Brian Kilner '16 and crew's Tom Daley, 12 first-teamers, four second-teamers and 24 honorable mentions). Additionally, the Eagles were credited with 120 points for team postseason accolades (four championships and four runner-up finishes) and 77 points for our ranked teams at the end of each of their seasons (No. 1 in boys' soccer, No. 5 in boys' lacrosse and ice hockey, No. 7 in boys' basketball and No. 10 in wrestling).

Congratulations to all of our coaches and student-athletes on this deserving recognition!
