The HSHC Lab team attended the Chef’s Table Gala: Honoring Flavors of Hope at THEARC on September 19th, where we were proud to serve as Steward Sponsors for the evening. The gala brought together residents, nonprofit organizations, business, government, and philanthropic partners around a shared commitment to strengthening communities through food. 🍽️

The evening celebrated THEARC’s 7 urban farms🧑‍🌾 and their programs that work to expand access to fresh food, nutrition education, and economic opportunity for residents east of the Anacostia River.

Thank you to THEARC for bringing so many community partners together for a meaningful evening of connection, celebration, and support. ⭐️

🍎 Meet the HSHC Lab’s Fall 2026 Graduate Assistants! 🍎

We’re excited to welcome four GAs to the Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities Lab this semester. They will be supporting our research and evaluation projects focused on strengthening food systems, improving access to healthy foods, and promoting health equity across DC.

This summer, the HSHC Lab and undergraduate students hit the ground running to support the annual evaluation of DC Central Kitchen’s Healthy Corners Program. 🥦

Throughout May and June, data collectors visited 10 Healthy Corners stores across Wards 5, 7, and 8, gathering 192 surveys across two different surveys. 📋 Participanfs received gift cards to Subway for their time and feedback.

The HC program works to increase access to affordable, healthy foods in DC neighborhoods by bringing fresh produce options to local corner stores. The feedback collected form shoppers helps to identify what’s working, opportunities for improvement, and provides DCCK with data to help strengthen their program by hearing directly from residents.

A big shoutout to our student data collectors: Ashfia, Emily, Naomi, Claire, and Priyanka! 🙌🏼

📣 Stay tuned! Our 10th Annual Healthy Corners Evaluation Report is coming soon, with findings and insights from this year’s data collection.

This week, the HSHC Lab is celebrating two incredible DC organizations expanding access to fresh, local food: FRESHFARM and Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture. Through farmers’ markets and mobile markets across the district, they’re helping connect communities with healthy, locally grown produce while supporting regional farmers.
