Last week we celebrated Exceptional Children’s Week, and it’s something that means a lot to me as a piano teacher.
Every child I teach learns in their own unique way, and there’s no one size fits all approach. Meeting students where they are and watching them grow is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Having a friendly cat in the studio has been a sweet bonus, too 🐈⬛ sometimes that extra comfort makes all the difference. 🐾 🎶
Thank you to all the amazing children and families I work with for trusting me to be part of your journey. 💛 🎶🎹

Some things in music can’t be explained — they can only be played.
When we learn a piano piece, we’re not just learning notes and rhythm. Part of the essential work is understanding the story behind the music — the emotion, the character, and what the composer might have wanted to express.
Technique helps us play the notes, but imagination and understanding bring the music to life.
Because the most meaningful parts of music aren’t explained — they’re played. 🎶🎹

Dedication at the piano doesn’t stay at the piano. 🎹✨
When students practice consistently, work through challenges, and stick with a piece until they master it, they’re building more than musical skill — they’re building discipline, focus, patience, and resilience.
For children, that shows up as confidence and stronger study habits.
For adults, it brings mental clarity, stress relief, and the reminder that growth never stops.
Piano lessons aren’t just about notes — they’re about life skills that create harmony far beyond the keys. 🎶💛

Today she played notes—but what we all heard was courage! 🎶
Performing for an audience, even a small one, fosters courage, resilience, and pride in hard work.
Our winter recital is over, but the music lives on! So grateful for the opportunity to work with these talented young musicians each week. Until the next performance! 🌟

I have always been a big fan of ensuring a student has a focused practice rather than hours of grueling mindless toil. A good focused piano practice involves dedicating your full attention and effort to specific tasks during practice sessions. This includes eliminating distractions, setting clear goals, and practicing with intention. Techniques like playing slowly, using a metronome, and breaking down complex pieces into bite-sized chunks can enhance focus.
What practice struggles do you have at home?

To be a teacher is to spark children’s interest and grow their potential. I believe every child's success begins with a spark. Each student has their own spark and I am reinvigorated simply by seeing their joy when they find it! 🎶🎹

Receiving notes like this is what brings me joy!
This is exactly the kind of student experience I strive for - one that is full of fun and learning. I aim to teach in a way that instills not only a love and appreciation for music, but one that also builds confidence and that will change my students’ lives for the better.
Learning piano should be a joyful experience and it should never be a burden 🎹🎶🎹

What should you as a parent be saying to help your child with practice time at home?
Here are a few examples:
“What did you learn about in your lesson today?” Let’s move away from the idea that learning the piano is learning to play a new piece. It’s about concepts: aspects of technique, notes and reading, phrasing, rhythms etc. Help your child to get what concepts they are learning.
“What do you need for your practice today?” Your child might need a reminder that they need their book, notebook, pencil to mark things or it might be that they need the TV to be off or even a snack to keep them going. Your support adds weight to practice sessions.
Whatever you do, rest assured that the importance that you place on practice as a parent has a direct link with your child’s piano progress. It’s proven!
More consistent progress = a child far more likely to continue their piano studies! 🎶🎹🎶
