At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, we made history with the FIRST EVER Deaf panel moderated by Motion Light Lab founder and director Melissa Malzkuhn with Deaf directors, writers, producers, Shoshannah Stern and Nyle DiMarco, and the Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin at . This hour long conversation explored the hidden contributions Deaf people made in shaping our society, the civil rights, and how important it is to tell our stories in our own voice, the innovations we are making in cinema, and the experience of creating two groundbreaking documentaries: Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, and Deaf President Now! The panel was insightful, emotional, and brilliant all at once. It was so full that the rest of attendees stood in the back. description: https://gu.live/impactlounge

2024 was a year of progress and success at Motion Light Lab! 🌟

💬 We’ve been hard at work developing the first episode of Here Comes Mavo!, the pilot episode coming up for release in 2025. We hosted storybook creator training in Montreal and Buenos Aires. We won several film awards for Dimensions. We released new storybooks, Deaf Gain What?! and Little Colors for Little Ones. We advanced our SAIL 3D avatar character design. We won the Elevate Prize and saw a photo of our Founder/Director hit the Times Square billboards! 🎉

🤗 We sure are looking forward to 2025, where we will expand even further! So many exciting projects on the horizon! Keep following us for more magic. 💫

P.S. The team photo contains everyone on our team, but is missing Visual Designer Silvia and UG Assistant Sofia!

Happy Monday!! We cannot believe it’s already the third week of July. In between travels, holidays, breaks, and lots of exciting projects, we managed to get this video out of a truly remarkable festival - the Clin d’Oeil, with our Director Melissa Malzkuhn and our HCI engineer Jason Lamberton attending.

Clin d’Oeil took place at Reims, France from 3 to 7 July. It is a biannual event and the biggest Deaf culture and arts convergence in the world.

We are proud that our work was represented at Melissa Malzkuhn’s keynote at the inaugural tech summit at the festival. It is also exciting to make connections with talented Deaf creatives all over the world, and conspire on designing bright Deaf futures. Especially for more storybook apps in different sign languages! Let’s go!!!

Video transcript:

Jason and Mez is standing in front of the red Clin d’Oeil banner. Both wave to the camera as the video begins.

Mez: Where are we?

Jason: We are here in Reims, France.

Mez: We came for the Clin d’Oeil Festival. This is a huge convergence of Deaf culture, arts, music, and more. This is my first time. And this is your?

Jason: 4th time! I just caught a skit. It was so good I laughed throughout. It’s so good to see and meet so many different Deaf people from all around the world. With their sign languages, there are many languages here: ASL, international sign, LSF, and more! It is beautiful.

Mez: Totally… I’m enjoying this experience so much. This festival also has film showings - and two years ago our Motion Light Lab film “Dimensions” won Best Animation award. Here at this festival! I’m so glad to finally come here.

Jason: Totally. This will happen again in two years - do come! It’s worth it! It’s so much fun!

🌟 Spotlighting one of our projects, SAIL 2.0! This is a work in progress.

⛵ SAIL stands for Signing Avatars and Immersive Learning.

‼️ YES! We’re developing a Virtual Reality (VR) game where people can learn everyday signs! Fun fact: The user will be able to choose from two teacher avatars named after two remarkable figures in Deaf history: Andy and Dot! Comment if you know who they are named after! 😉

💟 The teacher will guide you as you move through different environments and provide signing feedback!

🫱🏿‍🫲🏻 This is a collaboration with Action Brain Lab, another lab under the Visual Language Visual Learning (VL2) research center that is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation! We started with SAIL 1.0 and now we’re on version 2. These things take time to create but we’re grinding every day!

🤔 Want to know more? Post a question in the comments!
