GW Hatchet Alumni Association The GW Hatchet is the independent student newspaper of record at The George Washington University. in continuous publication after The Washington Post.

First published on October 5, 1904, The Hatchet is the second-oldest newspaper in Washington, D.C. And with a mission to educate students in journalism and business, The Hatchet has enjoyed tremendous success in the past 100+ years. But it is not just a newspaper – for many, it is the beginning of a long and successful career. Former students have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes, work as editors at

almost every major newspaper in the U.S., own successful businesses and cover major events for national news networks – or continue in the fields of medicine, law or politics.

Congrats to the staff of The GW Hatchet, who recently won four regional Society of Professional Journalists awards! Staffers were also named finalists for six other regional awards.

The Society of Professional Journalists selected The Hatchet as winners for four regional awards and finalists for six awards in an annual journalism competition.
