Dear Sierra Student Coalition Community and Alumni, First, thank you for your support during this rapidly shifting time at the organization. We appreciate the folks who have checked up on us and voiced their support for the SCC. We are excited to share that Sierra Club is committed to remaining invested in the SSC and in reimagining a new iteration of the SSC. There is still much to be worked out. Due to this and the low capacity of our staff, we canceled our scheduled Farewell call. We will work with leadership and stakeholders to ensure that the work of rebuilding SSC is consistent with the vision and values of our program and that it’s a place where members can contribute. The SSC will continue to be a movement focused on engaging youth and BIPOC youth. As for our current leadership, some of them will be on staff within the Sierra Club in different roles and they intend to support the stakeholder consultation process. Again, the SSC Staff are so appreciative of y’alls efforts to advocate for the SSC! The Sierra Club would not be the same without us.

Hi SSC friends and fam, it is with a weary heart that we are announcing the closing of the Sierra Student Coalition after 30 years of Youth Empowerment.

The SSC began over 30 years ago when a group of youth in California came together to get trained in organizing and advocacy skills and fight for key environmental issues. Over the years our network has transformed into a space where q***r, Black, Indigenous, people of color and multilingual youth could build relationships and organize together. What was once a small group that primarily focused on policy and electoral change, expanded to a network of youth across the US and Puerto Rico that organized and advocated for issues outside of the parameters of legislation with a deep understanding and emphasis on the intersectionality of social, climate, and economic issues.

This evolution is thanks to you all: SSC alumni, trainers, supporters, volunteers, and leaders who nurtured the SSC over the past 30 years. 💙

We want to make clear that the decision for the SSC to close was one made outside of our jurisdiction and power. The closing of the SSC is part of an effort from Sierra Club leadership to address budget challenges within the organization. We are sad and frustrated to say goodbye.

But in spite of the circumstances, we want to celebrate all of the work done thus far, the youth we’ve empowered, and the powerful organizers that have emerged from the SSC. Over the course of this month we’ll be actively collecting highlights from anyone who would like to share their memories from the SSC.

The Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is excited for our 3rd annual Earth Day to May Day action (ED2MD) to announce the launching of our campaign!

We will be hosting a Youth Story Slam on April 29th! Register at bit.ly/ED2MD23

We will bring together youth across the country to discuss the power of storytelling and build connections between our experiences and narratives. We will discuss opportunities to harness the collective power of our stories to make real change this year starting with advocating for stronger clean air standards at the EPA.
