Although John Wesley spent time in Georgia as a missionary, he was not a strong proponent of overseas missions. As a result, the Methodist movement outside of England was initiated and established by lay women and men who sought to spread the gospel to places across the globe. In this video Dr. Philip Wingeier-Rayo discusses Robert and Elizabeth Strawbridge as one example of Methodist lay missionaries who made a significant impact. Dr. Wingeier-Rayo's new book John Wesley and the Origins of Methodist Missions is available now at https://www.abingdonpress.com/product/9781791035167/.

Wesley Theological Seminary has received a grant through the Science Engagement for Congregational Flourishing Initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religions (DoSER) program to support, β€œThe Brain on Social Media,” a project exploring the intersections of brain science, social media, congregational life, and theological education. Led by faculty members Dr. Michael Koppel and Dr. Hyemin Na, the initiative brings together scientists, congregational leaders, and theological educators to engage both the possibilities and challenges of social media for people of faith, while equipping future ministry leaders to respond thoughtfully to its growing influence. Wesley DC's Doctor of Ministry program just concluded the intensive course, Arts & Contemplation, taught by Dr. Deryl Davis about the Mystics. In this class, students engaged with the rich heritage of Christian contemplative tradition through the writings and artworks of Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, St. John of the Cross, Brother Lawrence, and T.S. Eliot. Students visited the DC Franciscan Monastery, shared contemplative practices with each other, and read endless amounts of poetry!
