This week’s continues our conversation about empathy. Specifically, how do we know when to empathize with the patient?
We listen for empathic clues.
A clue is a comment by a patient that directly or indirectly provides information about the patient’s life circumstances (social clues) or feelings (emotional clues).
When hearing one of these clues, we often:
- Change the subject
- Persuade the patient that their concern is overblown or unfounded.
Instead, these comments are an opportunity to:
- Ask open-ended questions about their situation
- Reflect back/acknowledge the emotion they seem to be expressing
- Encourage the patient to express their concerns

National Health Education Week seeks to raise awareness of the importance of health education specialists and their contribution to community wellness, as well as the education of the next generation of health educators. Although we found overwhelmingly positive impacts of the Choose Well SC trainings, some challenges within the healthcare environment arose as barriers to training implementation. Society for Public Health Education
Health education improves the health status of individuals, communities, states, and nations; enhances the quality of life for all people; reduces costly premature deaths and disability; and focuses on prevention that reduces the financial and human cost spent on medical treatment.
Health Education Specialists are assets to their communities as they offer knowledge, skills, and training, as well as spend countless hours educating the public on health issues to promote overall health and wellbeing (e.g. diabetes prevention, to***co cessation, policies and systems that prevent disease, etc).

Happy ! Today, we're celebrating National Health Education Week. This observance week was created by the Society for Public Health Education in order to raise awareness of major public health issues and promote a better understanding of the role of health education.
Our health is one of our most important assets in life, so it's important that we educate ourselves on how to avoid chronic disease and keep our bodies as healthy as possible. To that end, we'd like to point you toward the Hendricks County Health Partnership, which has put together a helpful online health education guide.
