It may look confusing and really messy when you get started! I get it and I can help you to unravel the challenges and detangle the clutter. College applications require review and focus…the same way I do my hair. Take your time to separate the entire process to work in smaller sections. Using the right tools without the right techniques will create a bigger mess. But have no fear, I am here to help!

COLLEGE KENEKTS
By Robin Mitchell-Henry
#1 Listen to the Student
Just in case you have not noticed, the time has come to make plans for college! Whether you are reading this because you are the parent or the soon-to-be college student, you have plans to make and the clock is already ticking. If you want to be successful, the key is to be organized and focused. You need to designate and schedule a time to discuss and implement plans. College applications are only one step and this entire process will work best if parents and students all do their parts.
This is the time to talk and listen! Taking the time to talk is important. Listening is equally important, so take turns doing both. Students should be encouraged to speak freely to share goals, ideas, dreams, and fears. These are the driving factors that will influence the final decisions. Being honest about what is desirable and why it is so important will help parents figure out how to assist in reaching each goal.
Parents have the responsibility of listening without interruption as their children take steps toward becoming college students and ultimately, independent adults. This is not always a simple task, but with practice, it will happen. Asking the difficult questions must be done and providing an open atmosphere will create the harmony required for these very important steps. Try to avoid pushing your agenda, at first, just try to listen.
Compare the student’s successes, talents, skills, interests, and career goals with opportunities available at a variety of colleges and universities. This initial conversation will yield the information required to make a good list of strong possibilities for a college destination. The list should include schools where the student could receive scholarships based on ACT or SAT scores. Every school on the list should have the major for the desired career and other options in case the student changes his/her mind about career selection. Besides, costs should be considered and opportunities to study abroad, get internships, be recruited for full-time employment and do work-study.
There are many factors to consider, however, during this first meeting, the future college student should take the lead to share their goals.
College Connections will provide valuable information about the entire process to get optimal results as you and your family make the move from high school to college!
Who has your dream career? Make a list of your contacts. Get in touch with them and ask to do a shadow day at their place of business. Listen, learn and ask questions. Ask more questions! BE SURE you can find a job after graduation by creating a network of contacts!
What are your test scores? Take a look at which areas you excelled. Are you interested in a career in the areas that you demonstrate strong skills? Think about how you align with a potential career BEFORE making plans for college!
What is your career goal? Do you have the skills, talent and interest to join a company that has jobs in that field? Will this career have long-lasting opportunities? Is there any chance that automation will replace humans in this category? These are important questions to consider!
