In alignment with a vision for zero waste, Georgetown University has partnered with IRN: The Reuse Network to reuse and recycle over 7,000 pieces of surplus furniture from residence hall renovations during the 2020 calendar year. Learn more about this initiative here:

Perspectives on Faith from an Environmental Scientist

Join the Orthodox Christian Chaplaincy and the Georgetown Environment Initiative as we celebrate Jesuit Heritage Month with a presentation by Dr. Anne M. Thompson, Senior Scientist for Atmospheric Chemistry at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Drawing from decades of experience, Dr. Thompson will explore how she has witnessed faith and environmental science come together. A discussion will follow.

Since reaching our goal to cut the university’s greenhouse gas emissions in half six years early, we have been actively working to do even more to care for our common home. In another step to support sustainable energy use, the University has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement allowing Georgetown to annually buy 100,000 megawatt-hours of electricity from 11 existing solar plants, equal to about two-thirds of Georgetown’s electricity usage.

On October 28 activist Bill McKibben (350.org) will talk with Berkley Center Senior Fellow Paul Elie about signs “the human game” is straining the planet, the effects and prospects of Pope Francis’s encyclical letter “Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home,” and other climate developments. Georgetown President John J. DeGioia will introduce the conversation.

This Friday & Saturday, June 26-27, spread pollinator awareness by joining the DC Pollinator Porch Parade co-hosted by the GU BeeCampus Committee, Hoya Hive, and STIA faculty in partnership with the DC Department of Energy & Environment. Bee part of the parade by creating artwork and signs about pollinators and the native plants they feed on to display in your yards, porches, windows, and sidewalks.
