Georgetown University MENA Forum

The MENA Forum serves to raise awareness about pressing issues in the Middle East and North Africa amongst the Georgetown University community, and to help foster graduate student engagement with faculty and policy professionals involved in these issues. In the past, we have brought a number of interesting speakers to campus and hosted other events, such as the MENA Career Panel and Networking Reception.

9/29 MENA Forum Newsletter

We, The Georgetown University Middle East and North Africa Forum, stand in full support of the Black Lives Matter movement and mourn the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Tony McDade, and too many Black lives. We condemn white supremacy, police brutality, xenophobia, and racism in all its forms, and we stand in solidarity with the Black members of our community and families. Finally, as an organization founded on principles of foreign service, we pledge to combat anti-Black racism in the Greater Middle East and beyond.

Anti-Black racism is not an exclusively American illness. Recent American events, however, demand our immediate attention and engagement. As a student organization, we strive to be inclusive of the diverse campus community and recognize the deep historical bonds between Black Americans and those living in the Middle East.

We will continue to highlight the events and stories of the Middle East and North Africa. But the struggle of Black Americans demands our immediate attention, action, and solidarity. Our organization was founded to bridge the discourse gap between the United States and the Middle East. Today, that mission means looking critically at the problems here in the United States before understanding the role it can play abroad.

Although the American context of slavery, Jim Crow, and racialized mass incarceration is distinct, the struggle against anti-Blackness, state violence against marginalized people, and unjust incarceration extends beyond any borders. Movements in the Middle East and North Africa have often found common cause with Black Americans in the shared struggle against colonialism, oppression and state violence. The current moment, with demonstrations of solidarity erupting in Palestine, Iran, and Syria, continues in a long-standing tradition of transnational organizing and global solidarity.

We support the right of all people to organize, advance justice, and defend human rights, whether in the United States or in the Middle East and North Africa.

We support the right of all people to assemble freely and protest without fear, whether in the United States or in the Middle East and North Africa.

And we support Black Americans in their fight for equality here in the United States, just as we support those in the Middle East and North Africa struggling for dignity and justice.

Current events require that we all stand together in this fight for justice and demand accountability for the murders of Black Americans. This is a critical moment for us all to address the deep-seated racial injustices within our own communities and systems. We grieve the lives lost and promise to work for a better future.

Black Lives Matter.

In Solidarity,

The Georgetown MENA Forum
