Center on Conscience & War

Extend and Defend the Rights of Conscientious Objectors to War & Violence

Operating as usual

08/16/2024

Yesterday, alongside Veterans for Peace, Fellowship of Reconciliation, and Red Letter Christians, we brought together former Israeli soldiers, a former Hamas fighter, and active U.S. military members to demand an end to the violence in Gaza. Bill Galvin, Advisory Council with CCW, also spoke on WCTV about our bill to abolish selective service.

But our work doesn’t stop there. We continue to stand with conscientious objectors, guiding them through every step of their journey—offering unwavering support and ensuring they have the strength and resources they need. We are also pushing the “Appeal for Redress v2,” a way for active duty military members to directly tell their Congressional representatives how they feel about the government’s actions. If you believe in a future without war, your support can help us keep fighting for peace. Let’s make a difference together.

If you need help or want to get involved, visit us at centeronconscience.org.

Citing Ethnic Cleansing, US Army Major Resigns Over Israel's Assault on Gaza | Common Dreams 05/14/2024

People of conscience within the US military and outside of it continue to be woken up and activated for peace by the United States' government's unconditional support for Israel's siege on Gaza.

Citing Ethnic Cleansing, US Army Major Resigns Over Israel's Assault on Gaza | Common Dreams "As the descendant of European Jews, I was raised in a particularly unforgiving moral environment when it came to the topic of bearing responsibility for ethnic cleansing," wrote Maj. Harrison Mann.

Thailand: First conscientious objector challenges the military 04/29/2024

"On 5th April, last Friday, Thai conscientious objector and human rights activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal declared his conscientious objection in front of a military conscription centre in Samut Prakarn province, openly stating his beliefs instead of complying with a call-up."

"In his statement, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal said:

"I declare my stance, since after the coup d’état in 2014, that when the time comes for military conscription, I will not participate. This decision is based on the belief that coercing citizens who are not willing to serve in the military violates human rights principles,... and contributes to undermining democracy in Thailand. Ten years have passed, and I reaffirm my original position. Military conscription does not promote equality among citizens but rather enforces a system of varying degrees of oppression."

Even though Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal has not been arrested, he is still facing criminal proceedings for his pacifist and politically motivated conscientious objection and thus three years in prison."

War Is Bad for You -- And the Economy 02/27/2024

This is really good - full of useful and practical citations- from the always on point, Bill Hartung

Thank you for joining us for the second CO Peer Support Circle! We gathered with Vietnam and Korean war era COs, COs who have been discharged from the military, and military personnel who are working on the first draft of their application!

The Center on Conscience and War (CCW) would like to invite you to take part in our virtual peer support space that we are hosting on the third Tuesday of every month, 8pm Eastern time/5pm Pacific. This space welcomes all conscientious objectors to war to share community, solidarity and mutual support in a monthly virtual space.
REGISTER HERE: https://forms.gle/h39zAxAMtMo6o2PNA

For each session, CCW invites personal stories and questions from COs at different stages of the process. We are honored to provide an informal space for peer support. Please join us! This space is to inspire and support COs.

We know it can be difficult for a new CO to find their voice and speak out, especially those who spend everyday in a military uniform, surrounded by celebrations of war and violence. Hearing from other COs who have been there can help a CO find courage and community - the support they need to take their steps on a path of peace.

We are hosting these gatherings for all COs, no matter where you are in the process of expressing your conscientious objection to war.

You are welcome to come as you are, and we thank you for trusting us to stand by you through your most challenging, meaningful, and joyful moments.

The CO Peer Support Circles will take place on the third Tuesday of the month, 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific, and will require advance registration by following the link in our bio to ensure we maintain a respectful space. COs can attend anonymously, after registration.

Here’s the current schedule, through spring:

Please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
